High-risk Pregnancy

A high-risk pregnancy is a pregnancy where there are potential complications that could affect the mother, the baby, or both.  Research indicates that In the U.S.A., high-risk pregnancies can result in low birth rates in 8.2% of the 4.3 million babies born each year. A high-risk pregnancy, if not properly managed, can lead to serious complications, injury, and even death. 

High-risk pregnancy patients should be reported with a code from Category O09. Supervision of a high-risk pregnancy should be the first listed diagnosis.
