Surgical Package and Global Period

General surgeons have a wide variety of responsibilities that include treating injuries, correcting deformities, and treating diseases primarily through operations. General surgeons routinely perform many kinds of operations. Knowledgeable and highly trained in anatomy and a range of diseases, general surgeons perform operations on the skin to other body organs.

Imagine that you’re working for a busy general surgeon’s office. You are responsible for the scheduling and coding for many of the surgeries done in this office. The weekly reading provides you with some very useful information on the surgical package and global period. 

Include the following aspects in the discussion:

· Provide a definition of “surgical package” and include what services might be included in addition to the actual surgical procedure.

· Review CMS categorizes surgeries as major and minor and established 3 “global periods”.

· What are the three global periods (not already provided in 3-2-1 Code It or mentioned in another student's posting)

· Provide a surgery CPT code and description example for each of the three
