If Henrietta Lacks lived today, I'd like to believe that she would be impressed by the advancement in medicine that has resulted from studies of her cells (i.e., polio vaccine, Covid vaccine, human genome). However, in the same respect I do believe that she would be disappointed that she had no say in the matter, that her children are struggling for health insurance coverage to prevent some of the ailments that her family may have contributed a cure for. Despite some of the benefits reaped from studying HeLa cells the Henrietta Lacks would have served as a cautionary tale of what happens when informed consent is not preserved and when medical ethics in general go out the window in pursuit of the "greater good."
