Week 1 Lecture
Global marketing is a term often heard in the workforce. Today companies need to be able to market their products/services not only on a local level but also internationally. This first week we will dive into looking at global marketing and the environment and trade environments. Let’s start by first defining what marketing is. According to Keegan and Green (2020), “marketing can be defined as the activity, set of institutions, and the processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners and society at large” (sec 1.1). Now if we expand on this definition and look at what global marketing is, we would find that “global marketing is the act of focusing a product on the needs of potential buyers in other countries (Fleishman, 2019, para 3). One way of identifying global marketing is that “typically, a global marketing strategy requires a business to do new market research, identify countries where the business's product might be successful, and then localize the brand to reflect the needs of those communities” (2019, para 3). Let’s expand on global marketing strategy (GMS). According to Keegan and Green (2020) there are two ways a company can address GMS. The first is in a single country marketing where the strategy targets two areas; choosing a target market and developing a marketing mix. The other strategy would be entirely focused on global marketing strategy in which the company has operations in major world markets (2020). See Table 1-3 in our textbook for an example of the strategies for both the single country and the global marketing strategy.
Below is a video that explains more on what Global Marketing consists of:
What is Global Marketing?Links to an external site.
The second area we are focused on this week is the global economic environment. As you might imagine the economy plays a major role in marketing, especially on a global scale. According to Rique and Sumeet Links to an external site. (2019), “international marketing environment consists of global forces, such as economic, social, cultural, legal, and geographical and ecological forces, that affect international marketing decisions” (para 2). An interesting factor to consider when looking at the global economic environment is that it can be identified by three areas: global factors, domestic factors and organizational factors (2019). According to Rique and Sumeet the “global factors are the international uncontrollable environments. The domestic factors would include domestic uncontrollable environment and the organizational factors are the internal marketing environment” (2019, para 4). Since we are focused on economic marketing environment it is important to understand both microeconomics and macroeconomics. “microeconomics solely focuses on marketing environmental forces that determine the level of price, supply and demand in an economy” (2019, para 7). Macroeconomics would be the “study of whole economy which includes the study of complete industry, not just of a specific company. This involves the phenomenon such as Gross National Product (GDP) and how changes in the economical factors such as national income, unemployment, growth rate and level of price affects it” (2019, para 8).
The third and last area we are focused on this first week is global marketing and trade environments. According to Ortiz-Ospina, Beltekian & Roser (2018), “over the last two centuries trade has grown remarkably, completely transforming the global economy. Today about one fourth of the total global production is exported. Understanding this transformative process is important because trade has generated gains, but it has also had important distributional consequences” (para 2). Understanding the impact global trade has on economies it is understandable why global marketing would be essential. According to Conzalez Laya and Draper (2017), there are five core values that create a foundation for global trade to build on; “1. Growth and development, 2. Bottom line for consumers, 3. Bottom line for business, 4. How do you like them apples? And 5. Power in numbers” (para 4-15). It should be noted that number four is focused on “a world with no or minimal international guidelines for the standards countries use for public health and safety would be chaos for exporters and importers” (2017, para 13).

· Why did you choose this company?
· Provide examples of how this company reflects your own hobbies or interests.
· How have data and technology, social marketing, and ethics changed the game for these global brands?
· Why do you think they are successful global marketers?
· What would you do differently to further the company’s success? Would you introduce a new product, or maybe improve a current process?
· Give examples on how this change would impact the company.
The company I selected is Airbnb, I chose this company because my husband and I used to be owners and operators of an Airbnb. We have also resided at several Airbnb homes along our traveling journey. Initially I was not a fan of staying, due to a bad first experience. When we relocated due to our jobs, we did not want to sell our home in the beginning and we did not want permanent renters because we would stay in our house when we traveled back to Fayetteville, NC. He and I decided to rent our home on Airbnb to let it pay for itself.

The company I chose for my discussion this week is NVIDIA.
Why did you choose this company?
The reason I chose this company is not just because I am a consumer of there products as a PC gamer but also I am very interested in there innovative ways to continue pushing the envelope with there technology.
How have data and technology, social marketing, and ethics changed the game for these global brands?
Data and technology advancements have increased the recognition of the company globally in a positive manner which in turn has impacted a sector of tech that NVIDIA has cemented themselves as. "It dominates the GPU market, accounting for 88% of global sales, and is the market leader in providing artificial intelligence solutions."(Tangcay, Variety.com) NVIDIA has utilize the aspect of influencer marketing to reach its target audience which is embedded in the gaming community due to their tech being predominantly high powered graphics cards. NVIDIA has a very high standard of ethics as all employees are required to receive code of conduct, ethics, and sexual harassment training upon hiring and every two years after which in turn sets a stage of professionalism which is carried into business.
Why do you think they are successful global marketers?
NVIDIA is a successful company to the globe due to their innovative product importance to the world with AI being the topic of discussion constantly when speaking of the global future. This creates a now fail type mindset for NVIDIA when the globe thinks of the technological advancement that NVIDIA offer the world. "The Nvidia ecosystem, from its software to its sourcing of materials, allowed it to position itself as the go-to source for companies that needed massive computing power to handle their AI needs."(CNBC.com)
What would you do differently to further the company’s success? Would you introduce a new product, or maybe improve a current process?
Something that I think NVIDIA could improve is their supply of these GPU's as I understand they are constantly in high demand which increases much of the price of them. If NVIDIA can find a way to constantly have product available this may create more opportunity to have more consumers purchase their demanding products.

For this discussion, I have chosen Nike from the list of companies. I have chosen Nike as their company integrates sport, innovation and global marketing all together so smoothly. Nike's ability to connect with such a large consumer base worldwide demonstrates how remarkable the company truly is. Nike resonates with my interest especially when it comes to outdoor activities. Nike markets their products towards outdoor sports and adventure such as hiking boots and apparel design for various terrains. Their emphasis on performance and style aligns with outdoor enthusiasts like me. With the use of data and technology Nike can use the data from all across the globe to understand the consumer market. Nike excels in the utilization of social marketing by using platforms like Instagram to engage with a lot of their audience. The ethics at Nike was an issue in the past with regards to labor practices, but with more transparency Nike was able to maintain ethical considerations with being more in the public eye. Nike has been a successful global marketer as they have a strong brand identity, innovative and being culturally aware. Nike has branded well with the use of their swoosh logo where it is known worldwide for being owned by Nike. Also through great research, Nike has worked to develop products that keep their brand ahead of their competitors and meeting the needs of their consumers. Nike also adapts well worldwide as they become culturally aware of the market they are entering. Nike has done so "by carefully selecting international sponsorships"(Fleishman, 2023). Nike choosing their sponsors carefully demonstrates their success in not having controversy in their products developing in other parts of the globe. In order to further Nike's growth maybe there could be more implementation for customization. As more and more customers are trying to be reached the use of customization can be leveraged to please all of the consumers in the market. This kind of expansion could lead to issues with manufacturers as the more customization the more supplies needed and the cost of products could go up.

I picked Dominoes for my company. I enjoy eating food as most of us do, however pizza might be one of my favorite foods. I've also cooked a lot of pizza at my house whether that is frozen or made fresh.
Data and technology definitely has helped this company. Orders can be done online and printed out in the store. The employees can focus on making the pizza instead of constant call in ordering. Each building can also track finances better with new technology. Companies such as Dominoes can market anywhere now. In person, on the TV or on the internet.
I think Dominoes is successful in the global market because the pizza isn't bad and they also change up the ingredients to match the area the store is at. Processes in a company can always change and improve. For Dominoes I am not sure what I would change immediately. Maybe have a pizza or two that represents that country or region. Doing this might have people try all the pizzas seeing which one they like best.
