The Role of Digital Privacy Laws in Regulating Corporate Data Usage and Their Impact on Consumer Trust in the United States

This study will look at the existing laws on digital privacy in the United States such as the CCPA and determine their effectiveness against exploitative corporate practices. It will also assess the connection of such regulations to the public trust in social media, retail, and healthcare industries. Finally, it will determine the other sectors that have insufficient privacy protection that may call for federal intervention.

Theory and Interest Summary

I decided to focus on digital privacy laws because the usage of data has become more complex in the modern digital economy due to the Internet, and companies today have massive access to individuals’ information. As many activities move to cyberspace, I understand that topics such as innovation and privacy have become more relevant. However, data leakage scandals and corporations’ use of personal information have caused the current laws on digital privacy in America to be questioned. For example, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) has been considered to be a pioneer legislation. However, questions remain on the extent to which state laws are adequate to check corporate actions in the evolving technological landscape.

As such, this project will focus on analyzing how these laws impact consumer trust, specifically in markets like social media, e-commerce, and healthcare, which rely on personal data. More explicit to me, however, are the areas of privacy that require attention and how the absence of such protections will impact consumers. To address the current disparity in state laws, there should be stricter and holistic federal privacy laws. Furthermore, while legislation like the CCPA does offer some level of protection to consumers, they may not be adequate protection since corporations lobbied vigorously for those laws and enforcement procedures are weak at best, leading to a decline in consumer trust.

Looking at the rate at which companies are devising new technologies, and the amount of data that individuals are sharing on social media accounts, this issue is relevant and timely in this society. As highlighted in the problem formulation, there will be some gaps in the literature in terms of the long-run consequences of digital privacy regulations on customer trust in the sharing of sensitive information in various industries. Thus, my study focuses on finding better federal regulations to protect consumers in the new-age technology.

This topic works well, but it may be difficult to study from a social science perspective.  If you can find scientific studies on the effects of privacy laws (or lack thereof) on people's everyday lives, then it works great.  If you find such information hard to come by, other topics may be better.  I'm signing off on this one, but let me know if you go in a different direction.

Welcome to the second phase of the Research Project, where you will identify the sources you will use for your paper.  The quality of your Research Paper will depend greatly on the quality of your sources, so this is a very important step.  It amounts to  2% of your final course grade.

To complete this assignment, download the  Works Cited Worksheet  Download Works Cited Worksheet.  Complete the document by including  6-8 citations in MLA format for the sources you will use in your paper.  I have included 2 sources to get your started, and these are the party platforms for the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, which everyone will need for their papers. 

At least  1 scholarly article or peer-reviewed study is required as one of your sources.  Please watch the “How to find peer-reviewed articles” video for help in finding this kind of source

The remaining 3-5 sources are entirely up to you, but you must be careful to select the best sources possible for your paper.   These sources will be the only ones you are allowed to use for your paper.  So, you will want to make sure you have quality sources that can address each part of the prompt.

Once you have compiled your list of sources,  cite them properly in MLA format and submit the Worksheet to Canvas.  This will serve as the Works Cited page for your paper.  I will grade the sources for their quality and relevance to your topic, as well as the citation format.  I will also provide feedback to improve your source list and citation format to maximize your chances of success on the paper.

You can revise and resubmit your source list after the initial submission, and I will regrade this assignment with each submission.  You will receive full credit by submitting a full list of quality sources including a peer-reviewed scientific study.
