I can’t say I’ve been challenged to think different about diversity because I have spent over two decades in what couldn’t be the most diverse culture in this country, the Marine Corps.  However, this module simply builds on the fact that having people from different backgrounds on a team can be a valuable resource. The real leadership challenge is creating an environment where those differences become strengths rather than barriers. Johnson and Johnson explain that diversity can improve creativity, problem solving, productivity, relationships, and perspective taking, but these benefits depend on members being willing to understand and appreciate their differences (Johnson & Johnson, n.d., p. 73). This reinforced for me that diversity alone does not make a team effective. Leadership and a cooperative environment matter.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve applied this concept both professionally and through my leadership with the Mighty Oaks Foundation.  In both environments, I work with people who bring different experiences, personalities, communication styles, abilities, and perspectives. Rather than expecting everyone to approach problems the same way, I can become more intentional about listening to different viewpoints and creating opportunities for everyone to contribute. I especially connected with the chapter’s emphasis on being critical of ideas rather than people. Disagreement does not have to divide a team. When handled respectfully, it can produce better decisions.

The greatest value for me is recognizing that effective leadership requires looking beyond my own experiences and assumptions. My responsibility as a leader is not to eliminate differences but to build enough trust, cooperation, and common purpose that those differences strengthen the team.

This week helped me see what trust and teamwork can do for a team if used correctly and wholly. One thing I really enjoyed was watching the Remember the Titans compilation video from the learning activities because it is one of my favorite movies. Even though I have watched the movie several times, seeing the clips again made me think about how the players had to overcome their differences and learn to trust one another. It showed me that being part of a team is not just about individual abilities but also about respecting others and working toward the same goal.

I plan to use what I learned from this module by being more aware of how I communicate and work with others. As a Logistics Analyst, I work with different departments to make sure shipments are processed correctly and delivered on time. Sometimes delays happen unexpectedly, and everyone may have different opinions about how to handle the situation. This week reminded me that listening to others and being willing to work together can make a big difference when solving problems.

The biggest value I gained from this module is understanding that teamwork takes effort from everyone involved. Watching the Remember the Titans video reminded me that strong teams are not built overnight and it takes a lot of hard work from everyone involved. It takes a lot of time, patience, and trust to bring people together. I think these lessons will help me become a better team member and improve my leadership skills at work.
