The product I selected is a household television, specifically an LG OLED TV. The supply chain begins with raw materials such as silica for glass, petroleum-based plastics, copper, aluminum, electronic materials, and cardboard for packaging. These materials are planned by suppliers based on forecasted demand from component manufacturers.

The next link is component suppliers. These suppliers produce parts such as the OLED panel, circuit boards, chips, speakers, power supply, remote control, cables, and packaging. Planning is important here because the assembly plant needs the right parts available at the right time. If one major part, such as the display panel or circuit board, is late, the finished TV cannot be assembled.

The assembly stage brings the components together into the finished television. The manufacturer must plan labor, production schedules, quality testing, software loading, and packaging. This planning helps reduce delays, defects, and excess inventory.

After assembly, transportation moves the TVs from the factory to ports, distribution centers, warehouses, and retailers. Transportation planning is important because TVs are fragile and expensive, so they must be packaged, shipped, and handled carefully.

The store or retail channel then plans inventory levels, promotions, online availability, delivery schedules, and customer service. Finally, the product reaches the customer. Good planning across the full supply chain allows the TV to be produced, shipped, sold, and delivered at the right time, in good condition, and at a reasonable cost.

I hope everyone had an amazing week!

For this week's supply chain map, I chose our TV at home. It's a good example because you don't really think about how much planning goes into something that just shows up on a shelf ready to buy.

The chain starts with raw materials like glass, plastics, metals, and rare earth elements, which have to be sourced and planned months ahead since they feed into phones and laptops too, not just TVs. From there, component manufacturers build the display panels, chips, and circuit boards, relying heavily on MRP to schedule production against purchase orders and manage the long lead times on things like semiconductors.

Once the components are ready, assembly plants put the TV together. I found it interesting how this stage blends push and pull planning: production is scheduled off forecasts, but a lot of the component delivery is just-in-time, so the plant isn't sitting on excess inventory. After that, transportation and distribution take over, moving finished TVs through ports, trucking, and distribution centers, often planned around seasonal spikes like Black Friday.

Then it hits the retail store, where inventory planning and demand forecasting decide how many units each location holds. And finally, it gets to me, the consumer, whose purchase is really the signal that drives everything upstream. It struck me that every single link before this one exists only because someone predicted I'd eventually walk in and buy it.

What surprised me most is how much of this chain depends on forecasting rather than reacting. Has anyone else looked at their product and found a link where the planning didn't seem to work as intended (like a shortage or a delay you actually experienced)?
