Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes

This week we will also discuss the documentary Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes (2006).

The film's director, Byron Hurt, frames the documentary from his own life experience and love for hip hop culture. In that spirit, this week I'd like you to be particularly mindful of your own social position and write from that awareness (rather than trying to speak for/about other social positions). As you are viewing the film, please keep the following in mind:

• are there aspects of the film that you identify with?
• where do you think you'd fit into the matrix of social power laid out in the film?
• how can you talk about the film from your particular social location?
