Why do businesses exist, to earn profit (shareholders) or to serve a purpose to society (customer, employee, and environment)? Alex Edmans answer to the following question was “Yes”, it is both. Edmans conducted a control study that took him four years and what he discovered was that employee well-being causes good performance. According to TEDx Talks (2015), “Companies that treat their workers better, do better” (min 7:36). Edmans gave an example of Costco and how they pay better than the average company and provide healthcare to 90% of its staff which in turn hire better people. Due to this Cosco profits earned over 2 billion dollars in the past two years when this talk was given. According to TEDx Talks (2015), Edmans stated in his findings that “it takes the market 4 to 5years before the benefits of employee well-being fully show up in the stock price” (min 14:29). According to TEDx Talks (2015), “Caring about society is not at the expense of profit it supports profit” (min 11:24). This can sound simple and make a lot of sense, but unfortunately there are still companies with management teams that have not figured this out yet,
The approach that human resource management should take toward organizational social responsibility is that human resources need to be a strategic partner in business decisions. According to Bozma and Karcioğlu (2023), “Our results show that the role of human resource management practices that have social responsibility concerns is related to corporate social responsibility and is an effective instrument for talent management” (p. 1). According to Bozma and Karcioğlu (2023), “The SR practices in HRM enable to play a more active role in business processes and to increase the loyalty of both employees and customers. The SR practices in HRM provide employees with a safe working environment and better working conditions; HR policies based on ethical principles, equality of opportunity, and improvement in worker standards. They provide a reputable and safe environment for both internal and external stakeholders.” (p4). HR is critical and should take an active role with social responsibility.
Starbucks is a company that is implementing social responsibility by focusing on workplace diversity and Inclusion. According to Digital Marketing Institute (2024), “With an eye to hiring, Starbucks wanted to diversify its workforce and provide opportunities for specific cohorts. It has pledged to hire 25,000 US military veterans and spouses by 2025 as part of its socially responsible efforts. The company has surpassed targets, hiring 40,000 veterans and spouses since the launch” (par. 49). According to Digital Marketing Institute (2024), “To tackle racial and social equity, Starbucks announced a mentorship program to connect black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) to senior leaders and invest in partnerships. The chain also aims to have BIPOC represented at 30% in corporate roles and 40% in retail and manufacturing by 2025” (par50).

Alex Edmans
In his TEDx talk, Alex Edmans challenges the traditional view that businesses exist solely to earn profits. He explains that while profit is important, it should be a byproduct of serving a greater purpose—whether that involves creating quality products, caring for employees, or protecting the environment. Edmans illustrates his point by sharing examples like Marks & Spencer and Costco, where focusing on employee well-being led to long-term success. He argues that businesses can achieve sustainable profitability by prioritizing these values over immediate financial gain. His research supports this, showing that companies with strong employee well-being outperform others financially over time.
Edmans' approach suggests that focusing solely on profit can lead to short-termism and ethical pitfalls, whereas a purpose-driven mindset enables businesses to thrive sustainably. This perspective shifts the focus from profit as an end goal to profit as a result of purposeful, responsible business practices. By fostering a culture that values employees, customers, and society, companies can build a lasting competitive advantage that aligns with the broader concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Organizational Social Responsibility
Human Resource Management plays a key role in embedding CSR within an organization. Bozma and Karcıoğlu (2023) point out that Human Resource Management practices linked to social responsibility help attract and retain top talent. Employees are more likely to be loyal and engaged when they see their organization actively contributing to societal good. By integrating CSR into talent management strategies, HR can create a work environment that aligns with the company’s purpose and employees' values.
Additionally, Masood and Singh (2023) emphasize the need for HR to develop culturally sensitive work-life initiatives, especially in the wake of the pandemic. This involves understanding and addressing the diverse needs of a global workforce to promote well-being and balance. HR’s role extends to creating policies that support employees' holistic needs, such as flexible work arrangements and mental health resources. This approach aligns with Edmans' argument that focusing on employee well-being leads to better business outcomes, suggesting that CSR and HRM should work hand-in-hand to support the organization and its people.
Airbnb - Social Responsibility
Airbnb sets a strong example of social responsibility with initiatives like its "Open Homes" program, now part of Airbnb.org. This program provides free temporary housing to people affected by natural disasters, refugees, and those needing accommodations during medical treatments (Airbnb, n.d.). By leveraging its platform to support communities in crisis, Airbnb goes beyond simply facilitating rentals to actively contribute to social good. This commitment to helping vulnerable populations demonstrates how businesses can integrate social responsibility into their core operations, aligning with Edmans' idea that companies should serve a purpose beyond profit. Airbnb's actions show how businesses can use their resources to positively impact society while still being successful.
