Purpose
This assignment is intended to help you learn to do the following:
· Develop research questions and assertions.
· Apply critical reading skills: summarize, evaluate, reflect.
· Evaluate research questions.
Overview
In the first few modules of this course, you have spent significant time finding and analyzing scholarly articles related to your research question. In this assignment, you will gather additional articles, and you will begin to consider how your articles will be put to work for your own research question. How will each article help provide a foundation for your research?
Specifically, you will develop a discussion post that includes the following:
· Your research question. Note that this is the time to refine your research question in response to the readings and information you have been gathering.
· Your list of sources related to your research question. In the Discussion: Research Plan assignment, we asked that you read and take notes on at least five articles on your topic. In this assignment, you should include at least 5-7 additional articles, as you build your reference list.
· An annotation of the article that you focused on in your Genre Analysis assignment. Your annotation should be 5-8 sentences, and in it, you should do the following:
· Summarize the major components of the source. Your summary may stress specific components to different degrees, depending on your research question.
· Evaluate the strengths and limitations of the source. If this source seems like it will be central to your review, what distinguishes it as a piece of quality research? What might be the limitations of the source (e.g., its currency, method, study population, etc.)
· Reflect on the relevance of the source to your particular research question. Why is this an important source? What cues might you take from the source in your own research? Will you be following or building upon its method? Will you be answering a call for future research that it makes?
· A short paragraph that addresses how this article relates to other literature on your topic. In this paragraph, you should:
· Draw connections between this article and at least two other sources from your list.
· Consider how the aim, method, or findings compare with those of other research articles.
· Consider the source chronologically – what earlier work made this research possible? What research followed it? To help you answer these chronological questions, you might consider the work’s citation trail. Consider obtaining and examining the sources that the given work cites, or what research has cited the work since its publication. You may want to use the Cited By tool in Google Scholar.Links to an external site.
· Consider: In what way does this article follow from, expand on, diverge from, or resemble other work?
· A reflection of your progress toward developing your research components. Revisit the ‘components of engaged scholarship research’ discussed in the Discussion: Research Area Exploration assignment in Module 2. Thesis Statement
What sets academic writing apart from other types of writing, such as workplace documents or social media communication, is its focus on reasoning that is organized logically, supported with evidence, and structured thematically to fit a particular field of study. Compared to informal or other types of pragmatic writing, which are more focused on getting to the point, being reader-friendly, or persuasive, academic writing is more focused on the entire writing process as a discourse, emphasizing the clarity, credibility, and the contribution new information brings to knowledge. For example, these writing conventions are demonstrated in the organized and detailed discussion of artificial intelligence in human resource management (HRM) in Nawaz et al. (2024). Unlike most genres of academic writing, this one is uniquely defined by its emphasis on empirical research, statistics, and the alignment of theory and practice. Compared to Kassa & Worku (2025), the article illustrates how the genre of scholarly writing, its conventions in terms of genre structure, engagement, style, and research questions, influence the impact of scholarly communication.
Genre Competency
Nawaz et al. (2024) show close conformity to the academic genres at various structural levels. The article has used the conventional IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion), which enables the logical flow of information about the reasons why the research was conducted, to the methodology, and finally to the findings and implications. The adequate abstract and explicit research questions give the immediate impression to the readers of the objective and level of the work, the features of appropriate academic communication.
This section-wise layout of the article makes it scholarly in terms of functional parts. This is supported by a literature review, which indicates that the authors have an academic interest in scholarly research. On the contrary, the methodology section provides the rigor to make the project academically valid. The discussion section and the results discipline the guess in the wider scholarly discourse. The formal, objective voice by Nawaz et al. (2024) is used consistently in the paper, following the academic standards. The authors maintain discipline-related language throughout, such as structural equation modeling, computing power, and outcome variables, which places their research into conventional academic discussion without the use of colloquial terms. The fact that they are technically precise and that their tone is detached and focused on empirical findings, rather than subjective interpretation, makes the study more credible and authoritative.
Syntactic form is indicative of common academic writing patterns, displaying intricate sentences with several subordinate clauses and placing more emphasis on detail over readability. The heavy use of passive voice, especially in the methodological descriptions, which include data that were collected and responses that were analyzed, supports the detached position most academic research should adopt, by reducing the importance of the active role of the researchers.
Comparatively, Kassa & Worku (2025) reveal a more diverse aesthetic style. They keep academic rigor but use more active voice constructions and include more explicit transitional points between the theoretical debates and empirical conclusions. This approach enables a simplified reading experience without compromising academic rigor. Regardless of these discrepancies in implementation, both studies masterfully craft an authoritative tone and methodical presentation, hallmarks of exemplary academic work.
Research Question Development
The culmination of my research has led me to this question: What is the impact of implementing artificial intelligence technology within human resource management processes on employee engagement and productivity within global technology companies? The existing literature provides a foundation of insights on this subject. Nawaz et al. (2024) discuss the operational AI functionalities (e.g., accuracy and personalization) and advantages to engagement, but fail to integrate these two aspects. Alternatively, Kassa & Worku (2025) argue that AI, as a tool, activates organizational performance indirectly through enhanced employee productivity. This literature review signals an important gap in the research: the need to go beyond the issue of organizational efficiency to investigate the influence of AI-powered HR processes on employees' work experience and their engagement.
