Week 4 Discussion: Communicating the Same Message to Different Audiences

Regardless of circumstances, everyone needs to understand laws, constitutional rights, and other aspects of the criminal justice system. Consider a scenario where you are assigned to convey the same information to different types of audiences. You should tailor your delivery and language to meet the needs of each group. With a group of non-native English speakers, your message might incorporate more basic words. With an audience of young children, on the other hand, your message might employ an upbeat delivery style and use of visual aids.

For this Discussion, select two audiences from the list below. Then, consider how you would convey a specific message to these particular audiences. Finally, consider how your delivery of the message would vary between and among the audiences to be most effective.

  • Juveniles
  • People with mental illness
  • Immigrants
  • Non-English-speaking citizens
  • People with intellectual disabilities
  • Deaf community
  • Elderly
With these thoughts in mind:

Post the two audiences you selected. Then, explain how you would convey the message such as “Don’t do drugs” to each of the audiences. Choose YOUR OWN message. DO NOT PICK “Don’t do drugs.” Be specific and provide examples. Finally, explain how your delivery of the message would vary between and among the audiences to be most effective. Provide a rationale for your different approaches.
