week 4 discussion
Teacher Created Assessments
As you know, the cycle of assessment for healthy development and academic success is a continuous process. Teachers plan for assessment during their teacher preparation time. Some assessment tools are provided by the school or program, but some of the most important assessments are the formative assessments that teachers create to monitor day-to-day learning. In this discussion, you will design your own formative assessment tool that you can use in your current or future educational setting.

Initial Post
In your initial post of at least 250 words,
- Share your chosen standard and the age range.
- Describe two learning activities that you could use to engage students throughout the learning week to support development toward the chosen standard.
- For example, if you were working with a math standard that stated: “Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality”, two learning activities might be:
- Working with small groups of students, the teacher will display cards with a different number for each student. Then, students will use their counting bear manipulatives to count out the number shown on their card. The teacher will assist as needed.
- During the morning meeting, the class will count how many days they have been in school using straws and discuss the total number each day.
- For example, if you were working with a math standard that stated: “Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality”, two learning activities might be:
- Develop one type of formative assessment to determine a child’s progress in this learning context.
- Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of teacher-designed assessments used with children.
- Explain what you learned about how to develop meaningful teacher-designed assessments to use with children.
