First off, the hypothesis that is of interest to us is whether premium unleaded gasoline gives us a reduction and an improvement in the mean acceleration time.
H0: u = 10.2 seconds
H1: u < 10.2 seconds
For this problem I would use a t-test. The reason that I would use a t-test is because from reading the problem a couple of times and seeing that we have a sample standard deviation of 2.1 and we also have a sample size of 41, which is definitely greater than 30 in this case.
T = (9.7 – 10.2) / 2.1 divided by the square root of 41 = -1.525
This type of distribution for a t-test is known as a sampling distribution.
Since the P-value of 0.630 > 0.05, we would not reject the null hypothesis. Our results are not supported in the situation that unleaded premium gas would give a reduction and improvement of an acceleration time.
In this problem a one-sided test is better than a two sided test because we are seeing on one side if there’s a reduction or an improvement in mean acceleration time.
Lastly, if we wanted to make it a two-tailed test, we would have to see if there would be a different in the acceleration time instead of just simply seeing if there’s a reduction.
