Discussion Assignment Instructions
You will engage in 4 collaborative Discussions through the course. You are required to provide a thread of at least 400 words by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned module: week. In addition to the thread, you are required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads with at least 200 words each by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the same module: week. You should use your course reading, videos, and other resources to complete this assignment. A minimum of 3 citations should be included in the initial post. Where it is appropriate, be sure to also support your initial thread with Scripture references.
Discussion Thread: Literature Review Analysis
This is a graded discussion: 25 points possible
You have been reading several literature reviews for exposure and familiarity. In the discussion for this module: week, list the three you have read within the first modules: weeks. Choose one of the dissertations you read and offer a brief analysis of the literature review in chapter 2. Writing your analysis will allow you to look closely at this literature review. You are about to begin your own literature review, so use this discussion to think deeply about the best approach to a review for chapter 2 of a dissertation.
Here are some questions to consider for your analysis. This analysis and response to the suggested questions must be brief. However, do not simply state “yes or no” to any of the analysis questions, but offer a concise response with example(s) from the literature review. For example, if you believe the author offered a strong biblical and theological foundation to his/her review and used appropriate authors/sources to do so, state concisely how he/she did this. This is a point of exposure and analysis designed to help you with your own literature review.
Suggested analysis questions:
· If there is a theological section, has the author addressed the most pertinent issue(s)?
· Did the author, in your opinion, rely upon the strongest biblical and theological writers for the topic?
· Has the author logically addressed the major variables in the study in the literature review?
· Can the reader understand the necessity of the study after reading the literature review?
· Has the author demonstrated existing connections between the variables in the study and the literature?
· Has the author demonstrated the “gap in literature” and how his/her research contributes to the existing literature by filling that gap?
· Is it clear to you as a reader how the literature shaped this study?

Dissertation Reading
There are many ways a doctoral student will learn the research process toward conducting their own research in a dissertation. The research courses in the Christian Leadership Doctoral Programs are designed to help you as a student to learn the concept of doctoral research and the steps taken in the research process.
Exposure and Familiarity: This course is designed for you to learn specifically about chapter 2 of a dissertation, the literature review. The course texts and various assignments help build your understanding of the rationale for a literature review, necessary components of a review, and how to go about conducting a review. One important way to learn and gain confidence to conduct your own literature review is exposure to other literature reviews from a social science dissertation. As you read several literature reviews in other dissertations you begin to gain a level of familiarity with this component of research. It is even more valuable to gain exposure to reviews that are related to your intended research topic. This exposure allows you to become familiar with the literature surrounding your topic while recognizing various approaches to a literature review.
Finding Dissertations: With the value of reading other dissertation literature reviews, especially related to your intended research topic, it is important to find relevant dissertations and review their chapter 2 literature reviews. The best way to find doctoral dissertations is through the Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) and specifically within the database, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. There is also a ProQuest Dissertations and Theses @ Liberty University to narrow to those produced by LU students. If you navigate to the JFL homepage, you will find the Find Resources feature. To the right of this search box is a link to “Browse All Databases.” Follow this link and then select “P” to narrow to databases beginning with P in the title and scroll to find both ProQuest database options mentioned above. Once at the ProQuest homepage, you can select “Full text” and “Doctoral dissertations only” to help narrow the search. There are numerous other filter options as well.
Preparing for the Assignment: This course has a discussion assignment (Discussion: Literature Review Analysis) in Module 3: Week 3 that requires some reading in advance of the module. In preparation for the discussion, you will need to read three literature reviews (found in chapter 2) from dissertations that are relevant to your research topic. Choose three dissertations from ProQuest related to your research topic. The selected dissertations must be for a research doctoral program (EdD or PhD), from a Christian institution, and deal with a topic in the fields of leadership or education. Each dissertation must be empirical in nature and be social science based in its methodological design. Then, in Module 3: Week 3, you will conduct an analysis of one of the literature reviews you have read.
