Social studies teaching methods will vary for every  teacher. The grade level and topic may be a factor in the kinds of methods you choose to use. A few methods for teaching social studies can be an inquiry or investigative method, an interview method, an observation or excursion method, a discussion method, or the expository method which is very teacher-centered. There is no single method that is all-encompassing in learning social studies. A combination of two or more methods may be needed to help students get the most out of learning about a certain topic. 

Preparation 

Gather 2 social studies lesson plans based on your state’s academic standards. One lesson plan should be designed for elementary grade K, 1, or 2, and the other designed for elementary grade 3, 4, or 5. They can be your own lesson plans or plans you find online or from a published source.

Note: You will submit a copy of each lesson plan with your assignment for reference. 

Analyze the lesson plans and look for evidence of standards, instructional methods and strategies, technological resources and tools, assessment strategies, and differentiated instruction.

Assessment Deliverable

· Use the template provided to first compare the two types of lesson plans, then complete your word analysis below. Copy/paste the complete template in the body of your word document for me to review. Include a copy of each lesson plan and references, as well. 

· Write a 700- to 1,050-word analysis that compares the 2 lesson plans and examines the instructional, assessment, and technological methods used. 

· Submit a copy of each lesson plan with your assignment for reference and include reference page

· Address the following questions in your analysis: 

1. Why did you choose these particular lesson plans?

2. Which of the core disciplines for social studies (history, geography, civics and government, and economics) do the lessons address? 

3. What national or state standards align with each lesson and provide standards coding and descriptions.

4. What instructional methods are evident in each lesson?

5. What other instructional strategies would you recommend to improve or add to each lesson?

6. What inquiry strategies to develop reasoning skills are evident in each lesson? 

7. What other inquiry strategies would you recommend to improve or add to each lesson? 

8. What assessment methods (formative and summative) are evident in each lesson? 

9. What other assessment strategies would you recommend to improve or add to each lesson?

10. What technological resources or tools are evident in each lesson? 

11. What other technology would you recommend for each lesson?

12. What differentiated instructional strategies are evident in each lesson? 

13. What other supports, modifications, or accommodations for diverse learners (e.g., English learners, gifted learners, and learners with disabilities) would you recommend to improve or add to each lesson?
