One of the best ways to incorporate health and physical education concepts into classroom curriculum and instruction is by planning theme-based units. Mapping out and aligning the standards, concepts, and outcomes with a theme can be a fun and engaging way to enhance and reinforce student learning, too. In this assignment, you outline health and wellness themes for each month of the school year.

Preparation

Research ideas for themes related to health and wellness that align with K- to 5th-grade health and physical education concepts and skills. As you are researching and brainstorming ideas, consider themes that fit the following criteria:  

· Aligns with national health observance days, weeks, or months (e.g., February is American Heart Health Month, March is National Nutrition Month, etc.)

· Includes kid-friendly topics appropriate for elementary students

· Supports healthy habits and behaviors

· Supports active lifestyle and fitness

· Supports social emotional learning

· Supports bullying prevention and awareness 

Assignment Deliverable

Create a  minimum 350-word outline of themes for the school year in which you include the following:

· List the nine traditional months of the school year (i.e., September, October, November, etc.).

· Identify 1–2 potential themes for each month listed.

· Include a brief explanation for each theme that describes how the theme supports children’s health and wellness.
