week 2 discussion answers

Technology is a huge part of education, especially within the last few years with Covid and distance learning. But online learning also allows for flexibility and convenience and allows more people to pursue their degrees. The use of technology in education is flexible, minimizes traveling, more cost-effective and allows for more family time since classes are attended online/in home versus in person (Gause et. al., 2022). Another way that technology is used in nursing education is that of simulated environments. This allows for educators to mimic real life scenarios that nurses may encounter at some point in their career. This can also be done via online virtual realities to simulate patients as well.

As for the importance of technology for the success of nursing education, I believe it is a high priority. It gives the ability for both students and educators to be readily accessible if there is a need to be reached. It also allows for assignments, communication and education to be performed from anywhere, which comes in handy in some situations. I will use it in all these ways as an educator down the line. With things like the Remind app and the Canvas app, it makes things so much easier for us.

The increasing availability and usage of technology in classrooms has changed the way education is taught. Technology in nursing education has complemented learning, thus increasing student knowledge (Gause et al., 2022). 

One current trend is the use of "cloud computing", which includes the use of YouTube, Google Apps, Dropbox and Twitter. Students use these such technology based sites to help with class preparation, documentation, recording, and learning (Gause et al., 2022). Professors may also use these to help provide more resources to their presentation of learning. 

Another important trend is the use of simulation technology. Simulation technology allows educators to put students in real life situations so they can practice and improve upon their critical thinking. High fidelity mannequins are controlled through technology and can give lifelike representation of symptoms that patients may present with. Educators must have the knowledge of technology to provide a well organized simulation activity. 

Technology is important for the success of nursing education for many reasons, with the most important reason of being able to meet the QSEN competency of informatics. Nursing requires the use of computers and navigating electronic health records. Nursing informatics helps improves safety by utilizing technology to "facilitate the collection, analysis and reporting of higher-quality data related to patient safety issues and health outcomes, as well as to prevent medical errors and allow for better monitoring and reporting of those that do occur" (Carlow University, 2021).

I will use technology as one of my many resources to provide to my students to enhance learning. I want to also be able to teach my students the use of technology and how it is used in their profession, so they have the exposure before graduating.
