As you approach research and writing for your literature review in this course, it is important to solidify your knowledge and confidence in researching well within online databases (particularly within the Jerry Falwell Library). Create a post to include the following: include an understanding of how to conduct efficient searches for academic resources, produce a list of source types to consider, and articulate what to look for in assessing the quality of a source for use in a literature review.

Week 2 Literature Map Assignment Instructions
Overview
A literature map is helpful to visualize how an author has put together his/her review and notice the important interrelationships between literature streams. This may prove to be a beneficial step in organizing and writing your own literature review.
Instructions
You will choose one of the dissertations you have read so far in the course and create a visual map of its literature review (chapter 2 of the dissertation). Think of the map as a visual representation of the outline to chapter 2. This could be in the style of a concept or mind map. Make sure each literature stream of the review is included visually within your map, and you have represented interrelationships between literature streams/topics that the author noted. You will likely have sub-topics under most topics represented in the literature map. Include two to three foundational sources (author and date only) for each literature stream/topic or sub-topic.
Include a title page in APA format, and the first page prior to the map itself should include the APA formatted reference of the dissertation, dissertation title, research purpose statement, and research questions. The map itself must include the dissertation title and research purpose visually.
The final document needs to include a title page, first page with the above stated information included, and then the third page (or more) for the map. The assignment can be created within Word or another program useful to these assignment requirements but must be uploaded to the course site either as a Word document or PDF.
1. Title page (APA formatted)
2. First page (should include: APA formatted reference of the dissertation, dissertation title, research purpose statement, research questions)
3. The map (should include the dissertation title and research purpose)
See the description above for further understanding of the map requirements and expectations.
Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

DISSERTATION READING There are many ways a doctoral student will learn the research process toward conducting their own research in a dissertation. The research courses in the Christian Leadership Doctoral Programs are designed to help you as a student to learn the concept of doctoral research and the steps taken in the research process. Exposure and Familiarity: This course is designed for you to learn specifically about chapter 2 of a dissertation, the literature review. The course texts and various assignments help build your understanding of the rationale for a literature review, necessary components of a review, and how to go about conducting a review. One important way to learn and gain confidence to conduct your own literature review is exposure to other literature reviews from a social science dissertation. As you read several literature reviews in other dissertations you begin to gain a level of familiarity with this component of research. It is even more valuable to gain exposure to reviews that are related to your intended research topic. This exposure allows you to become familiar with the literature surrounding your topic while recognizing various approaches to a literature review. Finding Dissertations: With the value of reading other dissertation literature reviews, especially related to your intended research topic, it is important to find relevant dissertations and review their chapter 2 literature reviews. The best way to find doctoral dissertations is through the Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) and specifically within the database, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. There is also a ProQuest Dissertations and Theses @ Liberty University to narrow to those produced by LU students. If you navigate to the JFL homepage, you will find the Find Resources feature. To the right of this search box is a link to “Browse All Databases.” Follow this link and then select “P” to narrow to databases beginning with P in the title and scroll to find both ProQuest database options mentioned above. Once at the ProQuest homepage, you can select “Full text” and “Doctoral dissertations only” to help narrow the search. There are numerous other filter options as well. Preparing for the Assignment: This course has a discussion assignment (Discussion: Literature Review Analysis) in Module 3: Week 3 that requires some reading in advance of the module. In preparation for the discussion, you will need to read three literature reviews (found in chapter 2) from dissertations that are relevant to your research topic. Choose three dissertations from ProQuest related to your research topic. The selected dissertations must be for a research doctoral program (EdD or PhD), from a Christian institution, and deal with a topic in the fields of leadership or education. Each dissertation must be empirical in nature and be social science based in its methodological design. Then, in Module 3: Week 3, you will conduct an analysis of one of the literature reviews you have read.
