Week 2 Assignment (English)

Assignment: Draft an outline using an established style of your argument that you will develop into your academic essay. Don’t forget to include your thesis!

Specific questions or items to address:  Use an established style of outline to create a framework for the argument you plan to draft as your academic essay (sample on p.54).

Criteria: Use the example in your textbook, The Broadview Guide to Writing (p 54).  Make sure it is 1-2 pages in length.

• Keep in mind, this course is progressive; you are building to the essay this week, then building the essay in the following weeks. This outline will be your framework for your upcoming essay.

In order to guide you selection of appropriate topics, certain topics are not allowed for this class. See The Banned Topics below:

The Banned Topics

•             abortion
•             bullying - school, cyber, or otherwise
•             death penalty
•             global warming
•             gun control/gun issues in general
•             legalization of marijuana or other drugs
•             obesity, childhood or otherwise
•             religious topics (such as whether or not God exists)
•             same-sex marriage, adoption, etc.
•             school uniforms (but dress codes are acceptable)
•             video games (such as whether or not they cause violence)
•             Any other topic that is NOT two-sided or is too broad
