 A nationwide study of mental disorders in the United States revealed the surprising fact that anxiety disorders, not depression, were the most prevalent psychiatric diagnoses.  Anxiety disorders are seen in 18% of the population in a given 12 month period, and about 29% will meet criteria for an anxiety disorder over the course of their lifetime.  In general, females seem to have increased prevalence for all anxiety disorders (2:1).  Why is anxiety being diagnosed so frequently?  Why are more women diagnosed with anxiety compared to men.
