After viewing the two films, you are to write a 6-12 (12 pt. double spaced) comparison/contrast paper looking at how the journalists depicted in each film are depicted as “heroes” or “villains,” or a combination of the two. Using specific examples from each film, do the journalists fit into the McNair’s categories of “Watchdogs,” “Witnesses,” “Rogues,” “Reptiles,” “Repentant Sinners,” “Fabricators,” “Fraudsters,” “King Makers,” “Artists,” or something else? Explore how each film’s portrayal of journalists may have also expressed the zeitgeist of the period which the film was made. How might each film have altered the public’s perception of the value of journalism in society? Last, how did each film’s portrayal of journalists mesh with your own perception of what journalists and journalism is really like? Grading will be based upon your ability to critically address these areas in cogent, well supported and detailed, essay. This paper will be worth 40 points (40% of your final grade).
