An effective career plan is designed to guide your professional life. Career planning involves carefully taking steps to evaluate your professional options and developing a strategic plan.

A. By now:

  1. You have learned about potential career options
  2. Identify careers that match your skills
  3. Understand career qualifications for your chosen profession

B. Now, establish SMART goals –

  1. Specific (Example - Would like to be a substance abuse counselor working with teenagers).
  2. Measurable (Example - Completing my bachelor’s degree in Human Services)
  3. Attainable (Example - Will apply for 5 jobs next month)
  4. Relevant (Example - I can start off as a case worker then work my way up as a counselor then a director)
  5. Time-based (Example - I would like to own my own nonprofit in 10 years)

C. Write out what your SMART goals are. (not an outline)
