Purpose: Academic research often undergoes scholarly approval. The research proposal and bibliography are your opportunities to research and promote your preliminary research on a focused research question. An annotated bibliography is a list of secondary sources on a particular research topic, cited in MLA format, followed by a set of structured notes (annotations) that summarize and evaluate each source.
Goal: Write a 400 – 500-word proposal that solidifies your interest in a specific issue and develops your focused research question for the final essay. Include an annotated bibliography of five sources in which you critically evaluate their claims, evidence, methods, and credibility.

· Understand how to choose, evaluate, and integrate sources.
· Practice entering an intellectual conversation with other scholars on your issue.
Follow these steps to write your proposal: (35 points)
1. Introduce your research topic and your focused research question.
2. Give brief background information on your issue.
3. Explain why you became interested in this issue and why this topic is important to you. Your statements here should be engaging and personally connected.
4. Briefly discuss the communities you are serving by embarking on this research. Explain why this research is important to them.
5. Discuss your purpose, plan, and goal.
6. Discuss potential research challenges and how you will overcome them.
Follow these steps to write your annotated bibliography: (Five Sources, 10 points each. Total 50 points)
1. Using the KSU Library Super Search, locate five approved scholarly sources on your topic.
2. List each source with an MLA citation. Use regular double spacing and hanging indentation.
3. Write each annotation in 1-2 paragraphs beneath its own entry.
a. Annotations should be 175-200 words in addition to the citation.
b. Discuss the author(s)’ background, authority, and credibility of the authors
c. Show evidence as to how the source is scholarly and peer reviewed
d. State the author’s major claim/thesis: “In this article, Author X argues…”
e. State the author’s purpose: “Author X argues this in order to…”
f. Summarize the main points of the source and what this source contributes to the field
g. Discuss how this source aligns with or contradicts other sources you’ve collected
h. Use one quote from the source (no more than 20 words) as evidence and explain why this piece is useful for your research
