For my initial working definition, copilot was used to assist with a starting point of reflection in the exploration of the concept of family. The prompt that was used was “Based on an ecological and Christian perspective, define the concept of family.”

There were two notable insights that were gained from the generative AI response. Providing an ecological perspective, generative AI defines family as a group of interconnected individuals (legally, biologically, by adoption, or covenantal commitment) who are socially and environmentally bound and influenced by societal structures such as community, culture, workplaces, schools, and churches. Garland (2012) asserts that these economic factors pervasively influence the societal experiences that directly or indirectly shape them. From a Christian perspective, family is defined as an interconnected unit of God-ordained relationships between father, mother, and children that are uniquely structured for the nurturance of love, Christ-like character, values, support, stewardship, and spiritual formations that reflect God’s relationship with the Church.

A limitation of this response is that it did not acknowledge the realities of how complex families function together or change over time. Theoretically, family systems change over time as individuals learn to adapt within the developmental transitions of their natural life cycles (Balswick et al., 2021). The prompt also did not mention how the influence of these contexts explains how families maintain relationships in the face of conflict, trauma, or dysfunction.

Family functioning is best defined as the ongoing interactions between family members that define expected behavior rather than its structure. Walsh (2016) asserts that successful adaptive family resilience processes such as shared values, beliefs, and effective communication helps family members reorganize familial roles, maintain relational connection, and mutual support through dysfunction.

I understand the essential elements of a family to be mutual support, trust, shared beliefs, values, morals, sense of belonging, care, resilience, nurturance, and respect between parents, children, and extended family members. My understanding is that these elements are a solidified covenantal commitment that serves as the foundation for reciprocated unconditional love, grace, growth, and intimacy that are embedded within families and passed down to offspring. Research demonstrates that these elements are the primary environment for the development of spiritual identity (Smith, 2020).

My experiences with my own immediate family were influenced by the nurturing and spiritual values and principles that were passed down to me by my mother and grandmother. In my experience as a mother, sister, daughter, aunt, wife, and friend, I find that my emotions and interactions change unintentionally based upon the developmental stage of the family member I am interacting with. For example, my interactions with my grandmother would not be the same as the interaction with my five-year-old daughter. The noticeable difference is that I would respond to my grandmother with respect and reverence to her life experiences, while my response to my daughter would be soft, caring, and age appropriate for conversation with her. Although the interactions are different, the elements of reciprocated love are the same.

The Bible teaches that “…suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope…” ( English Standard, 2025/2001, Romans 5:3-4). During family, extended family, or friendship conflicts, I have experienced how Christian principles have restored our relationships and kept us connected. My perspectives of family aligns with Walsh (2016) and Garland (2012) because I am less focused on how my family should be structured, and more focused on functioning together by meeting each other’s needs, sharing life purposes, help, and resources.

Garland (2012), in Chapter 2 of Family Ministry: A Comprehensive Guide, explains that family is a powerful concept in American culture because people have different beliefs about what a family should look like. Most people support families, and have different ideas of what makes a family and the needs of a family.  By this reading, I would define family as a group of people connected through biological relationships, marriage, adoption, or even connections that are linked by love, responsibility, support, and a sense of belonging. A family does not have to look like a traditional cookie cutter version but people that have strong connections.

I believe the critical elements of a family are love, commitment, communication, trust, protection, and emotional support. Family members, biological or nonbiological, prove that they have a willingness to care and support for one another during both good  and bad times. Families develop and provide opportunities to learn values, develop relationships, and build a sense of identity. Lee et al. (2024) explain that family relationships involve trust, caring, and shared responsibilities. Their research supports the idea that family is just not elated by blood and built from relationships.  Schadler (2016) discusses how family structures continue to change and why traditional definitions may not represent all family arrangements.

The AI Exploration Response

I used ChatGPT as my generative AI tool and entered the following question: "How would you define a family, and what is the most important factor  that makes people a family?"

One thing that confirmed that I already knew was that family is not determined only by biological relationships. Love, commitment, shared experiences, and support can also create close personal family connections. A limitation of the AI response is that it provided a loose definition without fully addressing the religious, cultural, and personal differences that influence how people understand family. Garland (2012) expands this understanding by explaining why family definitions can become controversial and are influenced by personal experiences and beliefs. Lee et al. (2024) also support looking beyond traditional family structures.

Reflecting on my own experience with my family is that family is who and what we make it. Family  is more than just sharing DNA but includes the people who provide encouragement, support, guidance, and a sense of belonging. My understanding interacts with Garland's discussion that  personal experiences influence how people define family. I also recognize that not every family looks the same or experiences the same challenges,  In this class, I would like to share my idea of family and how it has shaped my beliefs, values and faith in God. I believe a healthy family is built on relationships and the fact that you learn where you belong and feel safe to be yourself.
