Scenario

Green Valley is a growing  agricultural community. As the population increases, farmers are using  more water, fertilizers, and pesticides to produce food. Soil erosion is  increasing, more household and agricultural waste is being generated,  and new housing developments are replacing farmland and natural areas.

At the same time, residents need jobs, affordable food, housing, clean water, and a healthy environment. Community leaders must decide how Green Valley can continue to grow without negatively affecting future generations.

Imagine you have been selected to serve on the Green Valley Sustainability Committee.

1. Understanding Sustainability —
After watching the video “What Is Sustainability?”, define sustainability in your own words. Using the Green Valley scenario, identify one environmental, economic, and social sustainability issue facing the community.

2. Developing Sustainable Solutions —
Recommend two actions Green Valley could take to become more sustainable. At least one recommendation should address agriculture or natural-resource management. Explain how each recommendation would benefit the community.
