WHY does underage drinking lead to alcohol abuse AND HOW does it negatively impact one’s health, safety, and education? The drinking age is set at  21 years old in the U.S. in order to decrease the amount of drinking in young adults, lower harmful health and social consequences, and help lower the amount of fatalities caused by alcohol consumption.
