Two important criminal justice topics covered in this unit were the use of technology and the age of criminality. For this assignment, answer the questions below, which are focused on these topics.

1. A 12-year-old is tried and convicted in adult court of premeditated murder. He is sentenced to death when he reaches 18 years of age. Do you think this is right? Provide analysis and arguments to defend your stance.
2. John Wilkes (1725–1797, England) wrote pamphlets lampooning King George III and Prime Minister George Grenville. King George did not like the attack, and he issued a general warrant that led to Wilkes’s arrest for seditious libel. The warrant allowed the Crown’s forces to search all of Wilkes’s property and confiscate and destroy his property without trial as mandated by English law. The Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was written as a direct result of King George’s issuance of the general warrant. Analyze the impact of constant improvements in surveillance technology used for monitoring every communication system used by citizens. Does this deter crime? How does this affect the balance between the rights of citizens to be free from crime and the rights of privacy in our personal communications? How can a balance be achieved to prevent the U.S. government from replicating King George’s general warrant?
3. Provide analysis and arguments both for and against allowing children under the age of 17 to be treated as adults in criminal courts based merely on the charges filed by the government.
4. When crossing an international border to enter the United States, to include by car, foot, ship, and air, does an entrant have a right to computer privacy of stored files? Be sure to analyze and argue both sides of this issue.
