Six years ago a playground in a Brooklyn public housing project was erected in a "jail like" theme complete with prison bars and a cell door. A mother complained to authorities noting, "It was like promoting kids to go to jail" in a community along with six others in New York City making up the majority of the prison population in New York State." The NAACP and the Children's Defense Fund call it a "school-to-prison pipeline." As a resident of this area, you feel obligated to express your personal opinion to the Housing Authority.

In a 2 - 3 page paper, address the following questions:

-Do you have any concerns regarding the playground or are you content with the jail theme?  

-What is socialization?  

-How children may be affected adversely (or not) by playing on a "jail like" playground?  

-What is a stereotype?  

-How can stereotyping be harmful to minorities?
