Types of leadership

Observe a task group somewhere in your organization or community with at least six members.  Answer the following questions: 

• Who are the formal and informal leaders of the group? 
• Who are the followers, and how can you tell?
• What evidence is there, if any, of the developmental level of followers? 
• What observed leader behaviors would fall in the categories of delegating, supporting, coaching, or directing?  How well do the displayed leader behaviors fit the developmental level of the followers? 
• Are all followers treated the same way? Explain.
• Would the leaders benefit from applying the situational approach to this group? 
• How useful is direct observation of group process in determining leader style and follower development?
