Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving a website so it appears higher in search engine results when people look for information, products, or services. To me, SEO is about making it easier for the right audience to find a business online by creating valuable content, optimizing website performance, and using keywords that match what customers are searching for.

I currently work for Novem Interior Design, which manufactures automotive interior components for several vehicle manufacturers. After searching online, I noticed that the company has a clean website, but it doesn’t appear very high in search results unless you search specifically for “Novem.” That could make it harder for potential suppliers, job seekers, or business partners to find the company.

One strategy I would recommend is publishing regular articles or case studies about innovations in automotive interior design, sustainability, and manufacturing technology. This type of content could help Novem rank for industry-specific search terms while demonstrating its expertise. Another strategy would be strengthening technical SEO by optimizing page titles, metadata, and site structure so search engines can better understand and index the company’s content. These changes could help more people discover the company without relying only on referrals or existing business relationships.

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving a website so that it appears higher in search engine results when people search for related products, services, or information. In my own words, SEO helps connect a business with the right audience at the right time. It includes using relevant keywords, creating helpful content, improving website pages, and making sure the website is easy for both customers and search engines to understand. According to Ahrefs, SEO helps businesses increase their visibility in organic search results, which can lead to more website traffic and potential customers (Ahrefs, n.d.).

For this assignment, I chose MJB Holistic Hair Care as a small business I could support as a marketing consultant. MJB Holistic Hair Care is a natural hair and holistic hair restoration salon located in Bowie, Maryland. The business focuses on chemical free hair care, organic products, protective styles, hair growth treatments, and holistic solutions for scalp and hair concerns.

Based on a quick online search, MJB Holistic Hair Care has a solid online presence when searching for the business by name. The company’s official website appears in search results, along with its Instagram page, booking platform, and local business listings. This shows that the business is searchable and has built some digital credibility. What stands out most is that the brand has a clear niche. It does not simply present itself as a regular hair salon. Instead, it focuses on holistic hair care, hair restoration, organic products, and healthy hair growth.

However, the company may not be as visible as broader search terms that potential customers may use before they know the business name. For example, someone may search “natural hair salon in Bowie,” “holistic hair loss treatment near me,” “organic hair color Maryland,” or “chemical free hair salon.” If the website is not fully optimized for these types of search terms, potential customers may find competitors first. This matters because many customers begin their buying journey with a general search rather than a specific business name.

One SEO strategy I would suggest is improving the websites on page SEO. The business could add stronger keywords to its service pages, page titles, headings, image descriptions, and meta descriptions. For example, service pages could include phrases such as “holistic hair restoration in Bowie Maryland,” “natural hair salon for healthy hair growth,” and “chemical free hair care services.” This would help search engines better understand what the business offers and help potential customers find the salon when searching for those services.

A second strategy I would suggest is creating helpful blog content focused on customer questions. MJB Holistic Hair Care could publish short articles such as “How to Know if Your Hair Shedding Is Normal,” “Benefits of Chemical Free Hair Care,” or “What to Expect from a Holistic Hair Growth Treatment.” This type of content would support informational search intent while also building trust with potential clients. Since many customers research problems before booking a service, educational content can help move them from awareness to action.

Overall, MJB Holistic Hair Care already has a strong brand identity and a good digital foundation. The business appears online when searched by name, but it could improve its SEO by targeting broader service based and location-based search terms. As a small business consultant, I would focus on helping the company become easier to find by customers who are searching for natural, holistic, and chemical free hair care solutions in the Maryland area.

Strengths: Roughly $416 billion in revenue for the year 2025.

a. Apple's customer loyalty is one of the strongest in the entire technology industry, largely attributed to the company's consistent product quality and strong brand identity.

b. Apple's industry structure is an oligopoly, as its industry is dominated by only a few major players, which is beneficial for the company as it faces limited direct competition.

Weaknesses: Roughly $209 billion in revenue for the year 2025 (iPhone).

a. The majority of Apple's revenue isn't spread across all of its products; the iPhone accounts for a significant portion of total revenue.

b. Apple's supply chain is based largely in China, which has experienced disruptions and increased uncertainty due to geopolitical factors.

Opportunities: The majority of the target audience/consumers are located in North America.

a. Although Apple's customer presence is worldwide, there are still a few locations across the globe that the company has yet to fully penetrate, leaving room for expansion

b. Advancement in its AI features, such as Apple Intelligence, through its products can drive a more competitive position against AI leaders like Google and Microsoft.

Threats: United States v. Apple Inc. (March 2024)

a. Increased government intervention poses a growing issue to Apple, as stricter regulations and antitrust actions could limit its business practices.

b. Growing lawsuits by consumers can lead to significant financial penalties and negative publicity that harm Apple's public image.

Overall, Apple's SWOT analysis reveals a company with a commanding market position but also some notable vulnerabilities. Both ChatGPT and Gemini's results featured fairly similar responses backing the same core themes.

For my Week 1 discussion, I selected Subway because I previously worked there for approximately two years and served as the assistant manager of my store. Having firsthand experience with the company’s daily operations gave me a better understanding of its business model and made Subway an ideal organization to analyze throughout this course.

To complete this assignment, I used both ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2025) and Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft, 2025) to research Subway’s current strategic position. ChatGPT emphasized Subway’s global brand recognition, extensive franchise network, customizable menu, digital ordering capabilities, and opportunities for international expansion. It also identified challenges such as inconsistent execution among franchise locations, increasing competition, and rising operating costs. Overall, ChatGPT concluded that Subway’s long term success depends on maintaining operational consistency while continuing to modernize the brand.

Microsoft Copilot produced many of the same findings but included additional metrics regarding Subway’s operations. Copilot highlighted that Subway operates more than 35,000 restaurants worldwide and continues expanding internationally through master franchise agreements. It also identified declining U.S. restaurant locations, inconsistent customer experiences across franchise stores, and lower average sales volumes compared to several major competitors as internal weaknesses. Before finalizing my analysis, I compared the results from both AI tools with Subway’s official information and the course textbook because some AI generated statistics varied slightly. The similarities between the two tools increased my confidence in the overall strategic assessment, while verifying the information helped reduce the possibility of AI hallucinations.

Final SWOT Analysis

Strengths

Weaknesses

Global brand with more than 35,000 restaurants operating in over 100 countries.

Declining number of U.S. restaurant locations in recent years.

Strong brand recognition supported by an efficient franchise business model.

Customer experience can vary between independently owned franchise locations.

Made-to-order menu with extensive customization and healthier options than many competitors.

Lower average restaurant sales compared to several major quick service competitors.

Opportunities

Threats

Continued international expansion through master franchise agreements and emerging markets.

Intense competition from Jersey Mikes, Jimmy Johns, Firehouse Subs, Panera, and other quick service restaurants.

Expansion of digital ordering, loyalty programs, delivery services, and personalized marketing.

Rising food, labor, transportation, and operating costs that reduce franchise profitability.

Continued menu innovation, premium products, and alternative restaurant formats such as drive thru locations.

Changing consumer preferences and market saturation within many domestic markets.

Overall, Subway possesses several competitive advantages, including its global brand recognition, scalable franchise model, and customizable menu. However, maintaining long-term success will require improving consistency across franchise locations while continuing to invest in technology, menu innovation, and international expansion. As discussed in our textbook, a SWOT analysis allows managers to evaluate internal strengths and weaknesses alongside external opportunities and threats so they can develop strategies that improve competitive advantage (Kennedy, 2020). Based on this analysis, I believe Subway should leverage its global presence and digital capabilities while strengthening operational consistency and adapting to changing customer preferences to remain competitive in the quick service restaurant industry.
