Truong Ba’s Soul in the Butcher’s Skin -- STRUCTURES

Objective: Understand the structure of a play and how a play communicates

a main idea to an audience.

Description: In this assignment you will focus on at least two primary

elements of a play (character, structure, design, plot) in order to describe how

the play reflects Vietnamese society and culture. The paper is exploratory in

nature – but you need a thesis or main idea statement contained within a

clear introduction and conclusion. You might decide to include

historical/cultural background information or information about the playwright

– but this should also relate to what the main idea of the play is. Focus on

using the details in the play as evidence for your ideas about

Vietnamese culture and society.

Assignment Basics:

 4-5 pages in length. (1,300-1,700 words) 1 inch margins. Double-spaced.

Times Roman or similar font. 12 pt.

 Underline your thesis.

 Research:

o You will need to correctly cite any quotes from the play and the play’s

introduction.

o Outside research is optional – but must be correctly cited. (Don’t copy

or paraphrase anything outside.)

Process:

First, read Truong Ba’s Soul in the Butcher’s Skin carefully. In this paper use

the play as evidence to defend your thesis or main idea. Ask yourself - Does

the structure/content of the paper clearly relate back to that thesis? Do you

use specific details from the play to support your ideas? Are my introduction

and conclusion compelling and interesting?  I am most interested in your

own ideas!!! You might find outside research interesting and/or helpful… but

do not just restate the ideas of others about the play. Work to write a well-

structured narrative, not just a string of events, with a beginning, middle, and

end. Think of the details from the prints as evidence supporting what the

prints are communicating

GRADING

The entire paper is worth 100 pts. The paper will be graded according to the

following categories:

Thesis/ Main Idea – 25 pts

 Do you clearly state your main idea (thesis) in the last sentence of the

introduction? (UNDERLINE your thesis)

 Does the content of the paper relate back to that thesis?

 Do you use evidence to support your ideas?

 Is the purpose of your evidence clear?

Introduction and Conclusion – 25 pts

 Does the paper have an interesting introduction? Does it draw the reader

in and logically lead to the thesis or main idea?

 Does the paper have a clear ending/conclusion? Does the conclusion

sufficiently wrap up the main idea?

Content – 40 pts

 Does the paper communicate the author’s ideas about the play?

 Does your paper deal with specifics – go beyond the surface?

 Do you focus on at least two primary elements of a play?

Assignment Basics – 10 pts

 Does your paper follow the assignment basics? (Format, length, heading,

citations, and so on)

 Does your paper have a title?
