Isabella Staley

In balancing documentation across settings, Maya can create a simple, standardized note template that works for both her EHR system and the paper files at the community center. This helps her stay consistent with ACA (2014) A.1: “Counselors create, safeguard, and maintain documentation necessary for rendering professional services.” When navigating billing, she should prioritize honesty, accuracy, and transparency—core expectations in Section C: Professional Responsibility, which emphasizes truthful representation of services to insurers and funders.

Her role in program assessment also carries ethical weight. Section E (Evaluation and Assessment) and Section G (Research and Publication) require counselors to use culturally appropriate, evidencebased methods and to protect participant data throughout assessment and evaluation. The ACA Code also guides her through dualrelationship risks and confidentiality challenges in mixed settings, especially under Section B (Confidentiality and Privacy).

Since the 2014 Code is still the active version, ACA encourages counselors to continue relying on it while revisions are underway. Corey also reminds us that ethical decisionmaking should be grounded in client welfare, consultation, and clear documentation.
