As explored in this module, Land Art is a form of site-specific sculpture created directly in the natural environment. Some works are monumental, like Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970), while others are small, temporary, and subtle, like the works of Andy Goldsworthy featured in Rivers and Tides.

Before beginning your project, please watch this short clip from Rivers and Tides, which highlights Andy Goldsworthy’s process:

Land Art focuses on working with nature rather than against it.

Your Assignment

Step 1: Choose a Location

Spend time outside in a location that feels safe and accessible to you. This may be public or private land.

Please do not engage in any illegal or destructive behavior.

Step 2: Create Your Land Art Sculpture

Using materials found in the natural environment, create a temporary sculpture.

Keep in mind:

  • Do not damage plants, wildlife, or natural structures.

  • Do not leave behind materials that do not belong there.

  • If you bring something into the environment, you must take it with you when you leave.

Your work may involve:

  • Carefully arranging natural materials

  • Creating patterns or compositions

  • Making temporary changes in the environment

  • Using repetition, balance, contrast, or other design principles

Submission Requirements

You must submit:

  • At least 3 photographs of your sculpture from different angles

  • One photograph must include a selfie of you with your sculpture

  • One well-developed paragraph reflecting on your experience

Written Reflection

In your paragraph, consider the following:

  • Why did you create what you created?

  • What inspired your idea?

  • How did the environment influence your choices?

  • How did the process make you feel?
