Time thought exercise 3

Review the general instructions for these Time-Thought Exercises here.

If you have lived in South Florida the bulk of your life, you may never have been exposed to really old buildings, or old buildings in decay… that is, ruins. Nonetheless, from looking at the images in the art/architecture links in the module for this week, ask yourself: do you find “ruins” appealing and why?

Optional, but perhaps will help you relate to the "ruin" theme: go to the link directly below that lists "abandoned" buildings/sites across the nation and just web-skim. The second link shows Florida abandoned buildings and etc.

I found the first website when researching the town (Gary, Indiana) where I was born, and one of the ruins--Horace Mann High-School--was just across the street where I lived when very young. I thought it fascinating that the website developer would even have a site about "abandoned" buildings!

Alternatively, ask yourself: why are you moved (or not) by non-human species that live/exist for an extremely long time (ancient redwoods, certain turtle species, and so on). Perhaps go back to that cockroach we were pondering in terms of pain and time-experience: would you like cockroaches more if they were a bug species that lived for, say, several decades? Could you easily kill a bug that has lived longer than you have? Remember to be analytical and philosophical, not just impressionistic.
