When I think of spiritual care I think about taking care of a patients emotional needs. Doctors tend to heal the physical illness of patients, but it's the nurses that treat patient's mind, body and souls. It is the compassionate care that patients receive by nurses that can make the difference in a patient's life. When a patient feels like they matter and that they are not just a number they are more likely to trust the people taking care of them and participate in their own care, when this happens it leads to positive outcomes. A person's spirituality and faith values impact his or her understanding of illness as well as health care decisions. It is important to respect a patient's beliefs even if you do not agree with them. When a patient feel respected and cared about they are more likely to open up and participate in their care.
