"Evidence-based practice (EBP) involves the use of current available and relevant evidence together with clinical expertise and patient unique values and preferences to guide practice (Mehra et al., 2025). EBP relies on the latest scientific research findings to inform clinical decision making or address key patient care questions. The approach entails identifying and analyzing evidence to assess the effectiveness of a certain intervention or approach to care. For example, Chan et al.’s (2025) systematic review and meta-analysis shows that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is effective in the management of subclinical depression. The evidence can be used to guide the implementation of the approach in managing depression in the clinical setting.

On the contrary, theory-based practice involves applying theoretical frameworks to guide nursing practice. Theory offers nurses a perspective that helps view client issues holistically and purposefully organize the day-to-day care. As Onyiapat et al. (2025) suggests, theory-based practice is not all about how the theory is applied to patients’ care but offers a conceptual framework for dialogue with the clients generating situation specific knowledge about health and healing. For instance, the transtheoretical model is applied in guiding behavior change. The theory posits that one undergoes different stages of readiness and feeling confidence about the ability to change(Walton et al., 2022). For example, when handling smoking cessation patients, the model offers a framework for the nurse to openly engage to understand where the individual is in relation to the behavior change and respect their choice rather than telling the patient that they must change their behavior. Thus, the theory offers a framework to structure engagement with the patient to generate specific information regarding their health and the change process rather than specific intervention.

In general, EBP is based on scientifically validated evidence to guide clinical decision-making or intervention to improve patient outcomes. It emphasizes empirical evidence to guide practice for optimal outcomes. On the other hand, theory guided practice provides a conceptual framework for interpreting experiences and gaining a perspective for holistic and personalized care.
