Background Information

Unfortunately, in the United States, black women face a high mortality rate after giving birth. According to the article “Black Women Over Three Times More Likely to Die in Pregnancy, Postpartum Than White Women, New Research Finds,” some of the causes are preeclampsia/ eclampsia, and hemorrhage. The fifth leading cause of maternal death was ectopic pregnancy. Throughout this research, I will also be comparing the death rates that black women face after giving birth to those of different races. There are several questions I want to research that are important for this paper. This is a serious issue in America that should be addressed more.

Research Questions

Why do black women face a higher death mortality rate after giving birth compared to non-black women?

Is there systematic racism in the healthcare field?

What can be done to reduce the mortality rate in black women?

Is there history dating back to slavery that explains why this occurs?

What is the history of the after effects, of black women dying after giving birth in America?

Is the death rate lower in in-home water birth situations or in hospitals?

Do African American babies also face a high mortality rate after being born?

Relevance and Importance of the Research

This research is extremely important and relevant in today’s time because it is an issue that happens all the time. In the article “Black Women Over Three Times More Likely to Die in Pregnancy, Postpartum Than White Women, New Research Finds,” it is mentioned that deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth for black women, may be larger than previously reported, news research shows. African American’s have been facing discrimination in America for centuries and continue to do so. My goal is to research this topic in depth and find solutions to the problem.

Key Concepts

There are a few key concepts that I would like to focus on. A main one is the after-care black mothers receive after giving birth in hospitals and in homes if they decide to do an in-home water birth. For example, is it more beneficial giving birth at home than in a hospital?

Another key concept is proving that black women in fact receive less care than non-black women after, during, and before giving birth. There is data to back this information up and I want to provide as much as possible. It is so unfortunate that not everyone is treated equally in America. I want to shed light on that.

I also want to focus on why black women develop diseases during pregnancy at a higher rate than their counterparts. Is this due to their diet? Where they live? I mention this because sometimes living in cities where there is a high amount of pollution, it can cause respitory diseases such as asthma. Can obesity also affect pregnancy? These are just a few questions and concepts that I want to research.
