Virtue ethics is a normative ethical theory that focuses on the character, values, and moral virtues that guide a person’s actions. Virtue ethics will be my response to the problem of undocumented immigration in this country. Instead of only focusing on rules or the consequences of decisions, virtue ethics asks what a morally good person or community should do when facing an ethical challenge. When applied to the issue of undocumented immigration virtue ethics encourages society to look at important values such as justice, compassion, wisdom, fairness, and responsibility. According to Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, “ Contrastivism about reasons, for example, holds that whether some consideration is a reason for some action depends on what we are comparing that action to.”[1]
Undocumented immigration is a difficult issue because it has many different concern, including the enforcement laws, economic needs, family relationships, national security and the humane of people. An ethical response requires more than simply deciding whether someone has followed or broken a law. Virtue ethics dare individuals and leaders to examine the attitudes, values, and character that may influence their responses. The question becomes not only “how the law should be enforced?” but also “What kind of society should we want?” “How do we help those seeking citizenship?”
Virtue ethics recognizes that ethical decisions come from a person’s character and moral understanding justice with compassion. According to Daniel Statman “Manifesting one’s virtue character can be a rational response to a situation. It is not necessary displayed in optimizing behavior let alone behaviors or produces maximal value” ( Statman pg 82). [2]Compassion for others recognizes that immigrants are humane beings who may have experienced difficulty circumstances that include issues like poverty, oppression, violence and a desire for a better future for themselves and their family.
A virtue ethical approach helps leaders avoid extreme responses. Ignoring immigration laws totally could create challenges of fairness, safety, and the ability of a nation to manage its resources. One the other hand, responding without compassion could lead to policies that overlook human dignity and cause unnecessary suffering. Virtue ethics encourages a balanced approach that reflects wisdom and careful judgment.
Richard Gula’s Just Ministry: Profession Ethics for Pastoral Ministers provides insight into how ethical decisions should be approached. Gula stresses that moral responsibility includes identifying dignity of others and recognizing how decisions indicate our values. Gula states “Our human spirit imprinted with the Divine Spirit, make us spiritual or transcendent at our very roots. God is calling us to live in response to the gift of divine love already stirring our hearts.” (Gula)[3] This aligns with virtue ethics because the character of leaders promotes the type of actions and policies that they support.
Using virtue ethics, and ethical response to undocumented immigration would involve creating a system that values both accountability and compassion. A responsible immigration system should maintain laws and processes that provide structure and fairness. However, it should also recognize that individuals involved in immigration situations have personal testimonies, families, and difficulties. A virtuous society would look for solutions that address these realities while still respecting the importance of lawful procedures. An example of virtue-based response would be determining pathways for certain undocumented people who have demonstrated responsibility within their communities. Individuals who have worked, supported their families, and contributed positively to society may because it recognizes individual circumstances rather than treating every situation exactly the same.
From a Christian point of view, ethics connects with biblical teaching s about justice, love, and caring for others. Luke 6:31“Treat other the way you want to be treated”. ( NIV).[4] Scripture also teaches believers to welcome the stranger and treat others with kindness and fairness. This encourages a response that show love and compassion should work together.
In conclusion, ethical response to undocumented immigration should be directed by virtues that promotes peace, justice wisdom responsibility and compassion. Virtue ethics teaches society that responses to challenging issues reveal the character and values of the people making decision. It also hold responsibility of respect to the dignity and humanity of individuals affected by those laws.
