Word count: 2500
Purpose:
· This essay is about innovation in general i.e., not one specific innovation.
· Critique and apply leadership and change theories.
· Change model in practice. Use PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act).
· Not descriptively. Don’t say what something is or what something does but create a debate and critique it.
· Use third person.
· Link it with healthcare and nursing.
Start from Introduction:
Introduction to the essay and what will be achieved.
Introduce that you will be talking about leadership and change theories. You will be critiquing and discussing them, and why innovation is important in healthcare. What are the drivers and talk about Innovation in NHS in general.
Introduction to innovation and choice of change model and rational for use. Use PDSA model and compare against Kotters model and confirm why we have decided to use PDSA model.
Plan (Larger section):
· Why is plan important and what does literature say about it?
· Stake holders (use Patients & family, multi-disciplinary team and nurses).
· What does literature say about stake holders.
· Why do we need to get them onboard as early as possible.
· Think about sponsorship and financial perspective.
· Stake holder analysis. What does literature say about the stake holder analysis tool.
· Use SWOT model for stake holder analysis.
Do (Larger section):
· Why is Do important and what does literature say about it?
· Leadership Theory linking with innovation.
· What kind of leadership theory goes well with change innovation.
· Please use transformational leadership theory.
· Please do a small comparison with other leadership theory and provide some rational why we use transformational theory vs. other leadership theories.
· What kind of leader’s support for change in NHS and what kind of skills and attributes they need to have.
· Communicating a vision – what leadership theory says about this and why it is important. What are the benefits and limitations and why the leaders need to create a vision for their staff. How do they get staff on board and what kind of things they need to do.
· Kings fund
· Engaging / Empowering staff.
· Short term wins / Gains. What does literature say about short term wins and gains. Why are these important to get staff on onboard. Create that debate.
· Rogers Diffusion curve model – what does literature says about this diffusion curve (more critique).
· Resistance to change. Why people might be resistant to change.
· How to mitigate it.
· Innovators and early adapters and link it to your innovation style.
· Lewin’s change theory (freeze and refreeze model) – Talk how this might enhance the PDSA cycle at the time. Create a debate based on what literature says about it (more critique). Avoid descriptive writing.
Study (smaller section):
Find a literature saying that why we measure innovation and change. Why do we evaluate innovation in change.
· Why measure:
· Methods and how it could be achieved.
· Audits
· Carers Feedback
· Focus group questionnaire.
· Qualitative and quantitative.
· Can refer back to stakeholders if we can measure any change or improvements.
Act (Smaller section):
What’s the next steps and why is sustainability important linking back to the leadership style selected.
· What next?
· The importance of sustainability and how we will keep the change on going. Feed back to the stake holders on how they will keep on going the potential change.
Conclusion:
· Summary of the key points from leadership discussions. Not to add anything new in here. Don’t just say what’s covered but say what we have learned.
