What stands out to you here and what can we do as counselors to better prepare ourselves for assisting those dealing with these specific issues? One common health issues associated with aging is dementia. As a Counselor working with older adults experiencing dementia face several challenges as the condition affects memory, communication, judgment, and emotional functioning and loss of cognitive functioning. Dementia can caused by a wide variety and the most common cause is Alzheimer's, vascular condition, or Parkinson disease as my Grandfather had a Parkinson disease he had same symptoms as dementia. I feel one major challenge is to communication as dementia process client may be to struggle to express their thoughts, conservation, understanding complex questions. It requires counselors to adapt techniques by using simple language, repetition, and patience. While ethical concerns may arises regarding informed consent, confidentiality as the disease progress. What stands out to me is the profound impact dementia has on both the individuals and their support system. As a counselor to better prepare ourselves for assisting those dealing with this specific issues, counselor may seek specialized training in aging, cognitive and dementia care. Developing skills in with multidisciplinary teams, such as physicians, caregivers and more. Counselors may develop skills including cultivate empathy, flexibility, and cultural competence.

I chose dementia as the health issue discussed in Chapter 5. Dementia presents several challenges for counselors because it affects memory, reasoning, communication, and behavior. In counseling, this can make it difficult for clients to follow conversations, remember goals, or engage consistently in treatment. Counselors may also need to work with caregivers and family members, which adds another layer of complexity. What stands out to me most is that dementia affects not only the client, but also the entire support system around them. As counselors, we can better prepare ourselves by learning more about cognitive changes in aging, practicing patience and clear communication, and collaborating with other professionals who support older adults. It is also important to recognize that older adults with dementia still deserve dignity, respect, and person-centered care.

Part 2: Weekly Assignment #2 Research and locate one relevant scholarly journal article pertaining to a specific mental health issue discussed in chapter 6 of your text. Attach a copy of this article and provide a one page summary of you findings. What are some implications for counselors in training who will be working specifically with older populations?

Part 3: Test Bank Submission #2

Create and submit via canvas a total of 8 test bank questions for Chapters 5 and 6 and assigned article for reading  (Behind the Book: Counseling Older People: Opportunities and Challenges). 6 of the questions (3 questions from chapter 5 and 3 questions from chapter 6) should be in multiple choice format (include four answer choices).
