Some of the roles of the professional nurse in creating an informed citizenry that is empowered to advance well-being within individuals, families, and communities are to promote health and wellness through community outreach programs. For example, to have vaccine drives, health fairs, and education on prevention services. Nurses would try to ensure that patients' voices are heard and they receive appropriate care by being advocates in the healthcare system. Also, the expertise of nurses in patient care and healthcare system affords them the ability to influence policies that enables access to healthcare services and promotes public health, which contributes to the development of health policies at local, state, and national levels.
The way that I can engage and empower my patients and families in my practice is by teaching them about healthy lifestyles, management of chronic conditions, and disease prevention. This may empower them to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. I would commit to my own health and wellness so that I may inspire patients and communities to begin a healthier lifestyle. Individual behavior is an important factor that affects people’s overall health (NICE, 2007)
Some of the challenges that inhibit patient engagement in their own health care would be limited understanding and knowledge of medical terminology, which can prove very challenging. Language and cultural barriers could be another challenge which could lead to minimal engagement and mistrust.
Nurses can provide emotional and social support to empower patients to improve their overall health and wellbeing.

The role of a professional nurse in creating an informed citizenry is to provide individuals, families, and communities with the knowledge, confidence, and resources of what my role as their nurse can do for them in their time of need. With centered focused care it promotes a more personal interaction for those who depend on our help and skills. This is important because it builds trust between the nurses and the patients with every experience that comes about. We can provide them with the right understanding of their conditions and how to treat them even outside of work hours to provide the tools necessary to help provide and develop knowledge and independence about their health. Our roles as nurses should represent care that respectively advances our fields and what it can bring to the table no matter what setting we are in. Being professional, knowledgeable, and engaged in patient care and health care involvement ultimately will show others that you care about and desire to continue to stay educated on the nursing field and all that it has to offer. Oftentimes patients come in and may not have family or friends for support and a nurse going out there way to give that extra education along with support and resources makes a huge difference in the patient's care and well-being even after discharge. Speaking up for individuals, families, and communities shows them that nurses play a huge role in their care and health needs. Advocating, education and health promotion, therapeutic support, care coordination and collaboration, and also keeping a positive professional attitude at work will help others see and appreciate the efforts our role as nurses provides. Challenges that inhibit patient engagement in their health care include nurses who do not have much time and rushing to help with other tasks or patients. this can leave some patients feeling like less of a priority during care, providing a less desirable experience. Some nurses do not engage enough with the patients emotionally and mentally on a therapeutic level which can inhibit building trust in the nurse providing the care. Other issues that may inhibit patient engagement in their healthcare are patients being unable to afford their care or unable to find the right support system to help them reach their healthcare goals efficiently. Sometimes younger people are also at a disadvantage because they may not have all of the resources, transportation, financial stability, or reliable care to receive the support and care they need.
