Topic Chosen: Workplace Violence in Nursing.
Specific Problem: Workplace violence (WPV) against nurses is a pervasive problem as exacerbated by chronic understaffing, high stress at work, and lackadaisical reporting and prevention system (Yildiz et al., 2025). This can cause a lot of nurse burnout, turnover, and poor patient safety.
Why this is important: Workplace violence is a serious issue among nurses in the workplace which has a direct effect on nurse retention, physical and psychological health and care to patients. Studies suggest that there is a high prevalence of WPV against nurses, especially during COVID-19 (Abedi et al., 2023). This is vital not only to ensure that qualified healthcare employees remain in the profession, but also the ethical and professional standards of the profession, and the safety of healthcare environments.
Research Question: What evidence-based strategies such as leadership behaviors, training programs, and technological interventions can be used within healthcare organizations and nursing leadership to prevent and manage workplace violence to improve nurse safety, reduce turnover, and improve patient care outcome?

Year/Location |
This quality improvement project was published in 2023 and was conducted at Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Maragheh, Iran, in January-November 2020. The 86 nurses were used in the baseline audit, and the 62 nurses were used in the follow-up audit. |
|
Purpose |
The study evaluated adherence to evidence-based standards on preventing and handling workplace violence against nurses and applied the JBI PACES and GRiP model to evaluate barriers, implement strategies, and measure improvement. |
|
Findings |
The intervention included audit feedback, ongoing aggression management training, communication and stress management training, immediate post-incident support, and an organizational risk management policy. Adherence to aggression management training rose by 49 percent to 81 percent. The support provided on time also rose by 8 percent to 73 percent, and adherence to a safe environment and risk management policy rose by 22 percent to 77 percent. The results back up an organized organizational strategy as opposed to isolated training. |
|
Factors Discussed |
Legal aspects involved assessment of legal strategies and a risk management and staff safety policy. The ethical considerations were institutional approval, informed consent, and acknowledgment of the obligation of the organization to furnish a safe workplace. Intervention planning was also informed by cultural barriers and taboos around the discussion of violence. |
|
Areas of Nursing |
Practice tasks were communication, stress management, and violence response skills. Administration duties encompassed multidisciplinary leadership, policy formulation, surveillance, and after-incident. Violence management education had to be continued in nursing education. The research tasks were regular audits and additional analysis of implementation barriers and sustainability. |
|
Impact on Profession |
The project enhanced knowledge, support, and adherence to safety practices by the nurses. A safer environment and better answers to violence may be beneficial to the nurses and patients. Nevertheless, the single hospital setting and the burden associated with COVID decreased the follow-up sample, and further auditing and leadership support are significant. |

This is a quasi-experimental study published in 2023 and carried out in a tertiary general hospital in Suzhou, China. The application study recruited 276 nurses during 2021, with 140 nurses in the intervention district and 136 nurses in the control district. |
|
Purpose |
The research question was whether an information-based education and training platform that is specific to the needs of nurses in workplace violence can reduce the incidence and severity of violence and enhance coping resources in 6 months. |
|
Findings |
The platform provided course learning, assessment, message feedback, management functions, and workplace violence reporting. The intervention brought about major changes in violence outcomes and resources to cope with such outcomes, such as a stronger reduction in physical aggression in the intervention group. Over a period of 6 months, nurses reported 187 instances of violence using the platform, and they were managed by managers. Over 95 percent of nurses positively reviewed the platform in terms of usefulness, ease of learning, acceptance, and satisfaction. |
|
Factors Discussed |
Ethical considerations were ethics committee approval, voluntary participation, informed consent, and the right to withdraw. Finance considerations were evident in the explanation of information technology training as a cost-effective substitute for the resource-intensive classroom techniques. Stricter laws and regulations on workplace violence were recommended by law. Transferability may be restricted by cultural and structural barriers. |
|
Areas of Nursing |
Practice entailed early identification of violence and gradual coping mechanisms. Administration entailed examination of reports, monitoring of affected nurses, and an incidental response. Learning was mobile and flexible. Larger multicenter studies, longer interventions, and assessment of decreasing effects over time were among the research priorities. |
|
Impact on Profession |
The platform provided an effective means of enhancing preparedness, reporting, and organizational response, and minimizing training load. Nevertheless, the effectiveness declined after 6 months, which implies that organizations must update content, support participation, and track results to maintain the benefits. |

Year/Location |
This self-controlled study was published in 2023 and was done in a comprehensive tertiary hospital in Suzhou, China. Scientists trained 130 nurses and assessed the incidence, severity, and coping resources of workplace violence at baseline and 3, 6, and 9 months. |
|
Purpose |
The paper has formulated and piloted a workplace violence prevention plan that was founded on situational prevention theory and the needs of clinical nurses, with the focus on violence prevention prior to escalation and enhancement of response capacity. |
|
Findings |
There were 11 high-risk situations used to develop 11 prevention plans. All the plans contained a prevention flowchart, treatment principles, and communication strategies. The incidence of workplace violence reduced by 63.85 percent at baseline to 46.15 percent after 9 months. The severity of physical and psychological violence was reduced, and the overall coping resource scores improved by 66.50 to 80.00. The intervention enhanced early threat recognition, communication, practical response skills, and organizational support. |
|
Factors Discussed |
Ethical considerations were medical ethics committee approval, informed consent in writing, and compliance with research guidelines. Spiritual, cultural, legal, and financial factors were not explicitly analyzed as components of the intervention in the article and are thus not included. |
|
Areas of Nursing |
The practice duties encompassed the early detection of high-risk situations and the use of situation-specific communication and response strategies. The tasks of administration involved raising organizational awareness and support. Training entailed specific training in clinical scenarios. The priorities of the research were multicenter studies, randomized controlled trials, extended training, or online learning. |
|
Impact on Profession |
The plan was viable and generated changes throughout 9 months. Nurses gained access to more effective coping and preparation, and organizations had a systematic prevention system. Due to the fact that the study involved one hospital and a self-controlled design, there is a need to have wider testing and frequent refresher training in order to be sustainable. |
Thesis Statement
Workplace violence against nurses can be reduced most effectively through sustained prevention training, strong leadership and post-incident support, and accessible reporting and technology-supported systems that strengthen early recognition, communication, and organizational response.
