1. Look up Business Process Improvement methods. Here’s one source I found, but you might find another (or you may have covered this in another class already).
https://www.unh.edu/it/six-phases-of-process-improvement
Note that some of these steps will not apply to this situation, but use what is relevant. You may even want to try Six Sigma methodology too if you like, but this isn’t required.
2. Think about the processes that go on in this class. It can include either side of the “supply chain,” such as things I do (e.g. create assignments, grade assignments, teach, communicate with students, etc.) or what you do (e.g. take assignments, do exams, projects, study, etc.).
3. Choose at least one process and clearly define it! Figure out how the process is done from start to finish, and who is involved, what time and resources go into it, etc.
4. If it involves extra information from other students, please survey some of your classmates and report that information. If it involves info from me, you can ask email me or text me 909-918-6316 if you need info from me, like how long it takes to grade, etc. This is likely something you can’t do last minute, so if you want to consider this extra credit option, start early.
5. Notes: This is extra credit, which means it goes above and beyond the class. I won’t give any detailed instructions if you ask how you should go about organizing this report, or where should I start, because honestly I don’t know! I’m asking you to be my consultant! Since I’m your customer (and paying you with extra credit points ), you should only ask me what you’d ask your customer
6. To turn in (minimum requirements for up to 20 points, more useful info is always nice):
• Length of the paper (or maybe you want a Powerpoint? Prezi? Etc.?) is not important to me, but the quality and thoroughness of the assignment is! It’s a report to your customer, so too much text may be hard to understand. Graphs and figures would be nice!
• Clearly identifies at least one process; Outlines the process from start to finish (5 points)
• Describes how to improve the process WITH input from myself and/or other students (being creative is encouraged!) (5 points)
• Use metrics to help improve the process (5 points)
Example: Suggestion X should reduce grading time by 20 min per student (a realistic estimate), increase student test scores by 10% You NEED objective measures like this! If you tell me it will “increase student learning” but don’t tell me how to measure it (it may not be obvious), then this is not thorough :/
