Ed.D. Concentration: Curriculum and Teaching Interdisciplinary Theme: Innovative Practices in Teaching, Learning, and Training: Incorporates pedagogical methods, instructional design, and innovations in professional training across various contexts.
Proposed Project Title Bridging the Literacy Gap: Reading Strategies to Support Secondary Struggling Readers
Problem/Opportunity Statement (2–3 sentences) The literacy gap remains persistent among middle school students. Many in the lowest 25% enter sixth grade reading 2 to 3 levels below grade level. These students often display deficits in reading comprehension, fluency, decoding, and vocabulary. “ Reading strategies provide a pathway for readers to reach text comprehension” (Wu et al., 2021, p. 2176)
Rationale for Topic Selection (1–2 paragraphs) “Struggling readers in secondary settings can benefit from targeted instructional support through differentiated small-group guided reading. This helps them engage with texts at their instructional level while receiving explicit scaffolding to improve comprehension” (Gallagher et al., 2023, p.1). Struggling readers often require explicit instruction that focuses on the five components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension). Current instructional practices often fail to provide the explicit and targeted support struggling readers need. Research proves that without consistency and explicit instruction, the literacy gap will continue to increase over time. It is essential to close the literacy gap by also fostering inviting, welcoming learning environments where students can learn across content areas.
Alignment to Concentration and Theme (1 paragraph) Bridging the Literacy Gap: Strategies to support secondary struggling readers align with my Fischler concentration in curriculum and instruction by developing research-based instructional
strategies and practices to improve student achievement. By researching innovative literacy initiatives and strategies. Structured to support comprehension, technology, and enhance literacy instruction. This research project represents the purpose of my concentration by seeking realistic and effective solutions to a continual instructional challenge. Students who are unable to utilize this skill proficiently struggle in the same academic areas. The explicit connection between innovative practices, teaching literacy pedagogy, technology, and teacher training is an interdisciplinary necessity in education.

Part 1: Introduction and Context Setting
Part 1 establishes the foundation of your Strategic Research Project (SRP). In this section, you will identify and justify your project’s focus, ground the topic in scholarly literature, and frame it within one of the ten SRP interdisciplinary themes. Your selected topic must also align clearly with your Ed.D. concentration area (e.g., Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Teaching, Instructional Technology and Distance Education).
This template is designed to support your work in EDD 8100 and EDD 8010 only. As you progress through subsequent courses in the program, additional SRP sections will be added to this same template. It is strongly recommended that you save two copies of this document:
1. One clean copy to retain as a reference guide, and
2. One working copy where you will complete and revise your SRP writing.
All sections in Part 1 must be written using professional, doctoral-level academic writing and must follow APA 7th edition formatting requirements, including:
· 12-point Times New Roman font
· Double-spacing throughout the manuscript (except preliminary pages)
· One-inch margins on all sides
· Accurate and consistent use of APA-style in-text citations and references
· Paragraphs consisting of 5–6 well-developed academic sentences
· Use of first-person academic voice when appropriate
Do not include bullet points, lists, sentence fragments, or informal language in the body of the manuscript. When referring to your professional setting, do not use the real name of the organization; instead, use a pseudonym to protect confidentiality.
All instructional text appears in red font and must be deleted before submission. Do not modify the section headings provided in this template. Headings are preformatted in APA 7th edition style and must remain unchanged.
Introduction
Start your introduction here. The purpose of this section is to introduce your Strategic Research Project (SRP) topic and establish the context for Part 1: Introduction and Context Setting. At this stage, your focus is on defining and framing the issue or opportunity that will guide your project, not on describing the full SRP or its final outcomes.
This introduction should provide a concise overview of the topic and prepare the reader for the sections that follow in Part 1, including the Issue or Opportunity Overview, Rationale, and Theme and Concentration Alignment. You will expand and refine this introduction as you complete additional components of Part 1 (Parts 1A, 1B, and 1C).
Do not attempt to summarize later parts of the SRP or describe your proposed product or methodology in detail. Those elements will be developed in subsequent parts of the project.
Your introduction should:
· Identify the general topic and professional setting.
· Briefly describe the issue, opportunity, or innovation gap.
· Establish the relevance of the topic to your professional practice and field.
· Do not include the name of the organization. Use a pseudonym. Example: A private higher education institution on the East Coast.
This section should be written in formal academic prose using APA 7th edition style. Use complete paragraphs of 5–6 academic sentences. Limited first-person voice is acceptable when describing a professional context. Avoid bullet points, lists, or excessive detail. Length: One to two paragraphs.
Issue or Opportunity Overview
Start your Issue or Opportunity Overview here. The purpose of this section is to clearly describe the primary issue or opportunity that your Strategic Research Project will address within your professional setting.
For the purposes of the SRP:
· An issue is a documented problem, gap, or deficiency in practice, performance, access, or outcomes that adversely affects an organization, system, or population.
· An opportunity refers to a documented need, emerging condition, or potential area for improvement where a new strategy, innovation, or initiative could strengthen practice or outcomes, even if a formal problem has not yet occurred.
In this paragraph, you must:
· Identify where the issue or opportunity occurs (e.g., organization, system, community, or population).
· Describe what is currently happening—or not happening—that makes this an issue or opportunity.
· Establish its significance by citing at least one scholarly or professional source that documents the problem or supports its importance in your field.
This section should be written as one well-developed academic paragraph consisting of 5–6 sentences, using formal academic language and APA 7th edition in-text citation. Limited first-person voice is acceptable when describing a professional context.
This section should focus on what the issue or opportunity is, not why it matters or how it will be addressed; those elements will be developed in the sections that follow. Length: One paragraph.
Example Starter (for illustration only):
In my role as an instructional coordinator in XYZ School District, I observed persistent inconsistencies in the implementation of literacy interventions across elementary classrooms. Although district guidelines exist, there is limited professional development to support consistent instructional practices. Similar gaps in instructional coherence have been documented in the literature as a factor contributing to uneven student outcomes (Author, Year). This issue highlights the need for clearer structural supports within instructional systems.
Rationale
Start your Rationale here. The purpose of this section is to justify why the identified issue or opportunity warrants focused attention and scholarly engagement . In other words, the rationale explains why this topic matters and why it is appropriate for a doctoral-level Strategic Research Project.
In this section, you will connect your professional experience to broader academic and practical considerations. A strong rationale goes beyond describing the issue and instead explains why addressing it could lead to meaningful improvement in practice, outcomes, or decision-making within your organization or field.
Your rationale should:
· Explain the personal or professional motivations that led you to select this topic (e.g., recurring challenges, unmet needs, or observed gaps in practice).
· Describe how addressing the issue or opportunity could improve practice, performance, access, or outcomes in your professional context or field.
· Incorporate 1–2 scholarly sources that support the importance, relevance, or urgency of addressing this type of issue.
· Conclude by clearly linking the issue’s significance to potential benefits for your organization, profession, or broader community.
This section should be written in one to two well-developed academic paragraphs , with 5–6 sentences per paragraph , using formal academic tone and APA 7th edition citation style. Limited first-person voice is acceptable when describing professional experience. Avoid narrative storytelling, unsupported opinion, or repetition of the Issue or Opportunity Overview.
Length: One to two paragraphs.
Example Starter (for illustration only):
Addressing this issue is essential because it directly affects the quality and consistency of practice within the organization. Scholars such as [Author, Year] emphasize that sustained attention to this type of challenge is critical for improving long-term outco
Theme and Concentration Alignment
Start your Theme and Concentration Alignment here. The purpose of this section is to demonstrate clear and intentional alignment between your selected topic, one of the SRP interdisciplinary themes, and your Ed.D. concentration. Alignment is required to ensure that your project is both interdisciplinary and grounded in the professional knowledge base of your concentration area.
In this section, you must:
· Identify one of the ten SRP interdisciplinary themes (and, if applicable, a related subtheme listed in Appendix A).
· Identify your Ed.D. concentration (e.g., Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Teaching, Special Education, Organizational Leadership, Instructional Technology and Distance Education).
· Explain, in your own words, how the identified issue or opportunity reflects the selected theme and why it is an appropriate focus within your concentration area.
Your explanation must be specific and analytical. Avoid generic or broad statements such as “this topic relates to leadership” or “this fits the theme of innovation.” Instead, describe how and why the issue, context, and proposed focus align with both the interdisciplinary theme and the professional expectations of your concentration.
This section should be written in one to two academic paragraphs , with 5–6 sentences per paragraph , using formal academic tone and APA 7th edition citation where appropriate. Limited first-person voice is acceptable. Do not use bullet points, lists, or fragmented sentences.
Length: One to two paragraphs.
Example Starter (for illustration only):
This project aligns with the interdisciplinary theme of Technology Integration and digital innovation by addressing the systematic use of digital tools to improve instructional consistency across learning environments. It also aligns with the Instructional Technology and Distance Education concentration by emphasizing design, implementation, and evaluation of technology-supported practices.
