Objective:

1. To practice the skills of epideictic oratory.

2. To demonstrate one of the eight types of special occasion speeches.

3. To use effective methods of persuasion: building on credibility, using evidence, using logical reasoning, and appealing to emotions.

4. To use effective delivery techniques, descriptive language, and a variety of supporting materials.

Instructions:

Congratulations!  You have been asked to give a special occasion speech.  For this speech, you may choose from: a speech of introduction, a toast, a speech to present, an acceptance speech, a keynote address, a commencement speech, a tribute speech, or after-dinner speech.   PLEASE NOTE: a roast was purposefully left off this list.  Your speech can be directed at a real or imagined person, and the overall goal of this speech is for you to have fun.  Get Creative!  For your submission, please submit an unlisted or public YouTube link here within the assignment page.  

Requirements & Evaluation Criteria

1. You DO NOT need to submit an outline for this speech.  You may create one if you wish, but one will not be requested.

2. Your speech must be delivered extemporaneously. Do NOT prepare or memorize a manuscript.  Please limit yourself to 4 (5”x8”) notecards or one sheet of paper for your speaking notes.

3. Your main points should be clearly identifiable.

4. Your speech must remain audience-centered at all times. Make sure you have addressed all forms of potential audience members: hostile, neutral, and receptive.

5. This assignment is worth 50   possible points. Evaluation criteria include: Effectiveness of Introduction, Organization & Use of Transitions, Content Development, Use of Supporting Material, Use of Language, Effectiveness of Conclusion, Extemporaneous and Conversational Delivery, Time Management, and Audience-Centeredness.
