Instructions:

Your second formal speech is persuasive in nature.  This speech is designed to help you further develop your persuasive speech-making skills.  Your goal is to convince your audience to agree with your proposition.  The central idea of your speech must be a proposition of fact, value, or policy.  For a fact proposition, you will assert a particular view of the facts based upon your knowledge and research.  For a value proposition, you will assert an opinion or judgment based on your knowledge, belief system, or values and evidence.  For a policy proposition, you will assert that something should or should not be done.  A variety of topics would be appropriate. You may choose to incorporate the theme/topic of your group work, or you may choose a topic of your liking.  While you may change topics, it is COMPLETELY acceptable to utilize the same topic from your first individual speech. A visual aid may be used in this speech, but is not required.

Requirements & Evaluation Criteria

  1. Your speech must address a question of fact, value, or policy.  Remember, when speaking about a proposition of fact, you must give special attention to reasoning and presenting your side of the facts.  When speaking on a proposition of value, you must identify your standards for judgment and justify your judgment in light of those standards.  When speaking about a proposition of policy, you must show a clear need (problem), plan (solution) with practicality (solvency), and benefits for your audience.
  2. Your speech should be effectively organized, outlined, introduced, and concluded.
  3. Your outline must be prepared and typed following formal outline format. Your outline is due one class period before all speeches are scheduled.
  4. Your speech must be delivered extemporaneously. Do NOT prepare or memorize a manuscript.  You may bring whatever you want to the front of the room, but please remember that eye contact with the audience is a graded item.
  5. Your main points should be clearly supported by AT LEAST FIVE (5) pieces of supporting material. Sources must be identifiable in BOTH the outline and within the spoken word of the speech. It is highly recommended sources must be from credible sources (newspapers, magazines, books). Keep in mind that I will be critical of our in-speech source citations.
  6. Your speech must remain audience centered at all times. Make sure you have addressed all forms of potential audience members: hostile, neutral, and receptive.
  7. After the speech write a 1½ - 2 page self-evaluation of your presentation. The self-evaluation should focus on your strengths and weaknesses on the following: preparation process (including topic selection, researching, outlining, and practice), delivery of the speech, and overall speech construction.
  8. This assignment is worth 100 possible points. Evaluation criteria include: Effectiveness of Introduction, Organization & Use of Transitions, Content Development, Use of Supporting Material, Use of Language, Effectiveness of Conclusion, Extemporaneous and Conversational Delivery, Time Management, Motivational Appeals, Credibility Appeals Audience-Centeredness, and Outline.
