Air quality problems come from many sources, even a hamburger as we discussed during class on Monday.  Some of these are obvious and some are harder to find, especially those where it's more difficult to make the invisible visible.

For example, the PVC industry has a history of manufacturing problems. From the lives of fabricators around the world whose families endured enormous suffering, to the environmental degradation of waterways, air quality, and soil, the problems are pervasive.

For your POV due on Monday you are to watch the movie Blue Vinyl which you can link to here: https://login.ezproxy.lib.utah.edu/login?url=http://www.docuseek2.com/v/a/D9b3 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. and then craft an essay that speaks to the role of the individual, people like Judith in the film. Keep in mind that Judith was a college student at Berkeley, studying architecture when she made the documentary.

Also, please read the following chapters from Paul Loeb's book, Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time : Soul of a Citizen.pdfPreview the documentView in a new window

As we seek to find our places in healing, repairing and transforming the world, how do the roles of people like Judith individuals offer a window into the ways you might participate in restoring health to people and place? What is your point of view about the way we trust industry (the market) to look out for our individual and collective health? As an emerging urban ecologist, can you untangle the social, environmental and economic web that industries like the PVC manufacturers weave into our cities?
