This journal requires you to examine the cultural significance of face masks. Masks are now part of our material culture, society’s physical objects. Your task is to discuss how masks are also part of our nonmaterial culture: part of the values, beliefs, symbols, and language that define a culture.
In your journal, consider the following from the perspective of mask wearing as well as anti-mask positions. Review the section of the text that discusses these points to strengthen your entry.
- What meaning have masks embodied beyond the utility of providing a barrier to prevent the spread of airborne droplets? What is a mask symbolic of for both wearers and anti-maskers?
- How have masks, or their lack, become a form of personal expression?
- What larger social forces are influencing and contributing to this issue?
