Research the use of social stories for teaching socially appropriate behavior to a child with ASD.
Imagine that you are a special education teacher in a resource room at an elementary school. One of your students is autistic and is having difficulty with understanding and responding to body language and facial expressions. Her peers in the room are starting to avoid her due to this behavior and you feel that a social story will help her make the connection.
Write a 2-page social story that explores a specific social skill for an elementary age child.
Include the following components in your social story:
- A title and an introduction which sets the scene
- The story with descriptions, coaching language, and “applause” for the student
- Photographs or realistic drawings that specifically reflect the content
- A conclusion that’s positive and supportive
