This week we were asked to focus this discussion on our draft of our Assignment 3 (research report). I chose to study the topic of when the British established their colonies in Australia during 1788. There were a number of reasons that the British had to transport to Australia most of which include, the overcrowding of prisons, economic opportunities, and the mining opportunities as well as other resources that the country could provide. During the colonization of the country, the aboriginal people native to the land began to be forced out and separated from their families. Part of the reasons for separating children from their families were to re educate them in British ways. Forcing them to abandon and forget their native language and much of their traditions.
I have chosen racial identity as my sociological concept of choice because race happens to be very consequential. I would describe racial identity as an awareness, and connection, and sense of belonging to those in an ethnic group that you share physical attributes and life experiences with.
The concept relates quite closely to the topic of when the aboriginal people of Australia became colonized by the British because of all that they had endured, and still do until this day. The process and strategic plan to assimilate the aboriginal people of Australia forced generations of their people into having lost much of their native traditions and teachings. It is what happens when one is so separated from one’s native tongue, traditions, and people. Their racial identity has been compromised and endangered on a greater scale. It racial identity is such an important topic and concept because no one is colorblind, so ignoring race means ignoring the establishment of racial hierarchies in society and the injustices these hierarchies have created and continue to reinforce (Smithsonian n.d).There are a number of different solutions that I have examined and explored within our resources and not ignoring race is the primary solution. By doing the opposite of ignoring different races allows us to embrace all of the differences we have between one another. Different cultures should be preserved, taught, and explored. How else can we learn about one another and our cultures and practices, which also help to break down certain barriers that we may have with one another.
